How do i change the alternator belt on a 1992 chry. lebarron if I don't have the schematics on the front end?

I need schematics on it. Does anyone have some they could email me?
How do i change the alternator belt on a 1992 chry. lebarron if I don't have the schematics on the front end?
What size engine does it have? If it is the V6 then it will have a serpentine belt and look like a capital letter %26quot;A%26quot; with the %26quot;legs%26quot; going around the power steering pump and crank pulley. The middle will go up and around the tensioner pulley
How do i change the alternator belt on a 1992 chry. lebarron if I don't have the schematics on the front end?
i own a shop, and if the old one is still on it, draw a diagram of it,that's the best way to do it,then you,ll remember it the next time, good luck.
Go to the parts store and buy a haynes or chilton's manual for your car. You will thank yourself over and over again. Or if you don't have the 20 dollars call them and ask if they can look it up for you.
I don't know if the belt routing on this illustration would be the same as the routing on your vehicle but it's worth a look. http://autorepair.about.com/library/pict鈥?/a> ...Good Luck...

How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?

I want to buy a 1997 BMW 318i but I am a home mechanic and have no trouble working on my Ford's or GM's. I am wondering what the difference is and if i could work on my own BMW. I don't want to do any major motor work just the basics. Example: Starter, Oil changes, Alternator, Tune up. What are some of the differences or obsticals i can come to expect. Is it an easy transition?
How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?
there really isn't much difference in things like this ,the BMW may cost you less ,because parts seem to last longer on them, oil changes aren't any more, lube jobs aren't either, for the most part of it one wont cost much more than a regular car, prices of parts are high right now for any car made, these just cost a little more that's all,but they also last a lot longer,so in the long run you may come out cheaper,a lot of people have, those are good cars, but like any other car made they do need maintenance work once in a while,it wont break you up though, good luck with it.
How does the maintenance differ on a BMW than on a Ford or GM?
no, BMW's are a major pain and expensive. You need a lot of specific knowledge and tools to do even the most basic of repairs. They are not at all user friendly and very expensive to replace any parts. That old a car even in good shape in a money drain. BEWARE!!!!
The biggest thing I see is price, it's a BMW parts are more expensive regardless if you can get shop price.

Some things are easier than others because of setup. The BMW is a lil more cramed area to work with, kinda like a ford to a honda, amount of space to work with.

I believe the BMW is more computer controlled compared to the domestics and the tools needed, you might need a couple of the specialty tools for that particular vehicle.

That's really about it, you will just have to open the hood and see, it shouldn't be a hard transition, but get the shop manual if you can, I believe if you know how to use torrents you will be able to find it no problem.
all i can tell you is that compared to your other cars the BMW parts will be damn expensive ya know gotta send the parts from Germany other than that i don't really think there is much of a difference

lift the air cleaner and have someone crank the engine and see if the injectors are spraying, if not check the fuse behind the cover on the fire wall [ injector ] *****
sounds like fuel pump issue to me...this is a very common issue on chevy trucks...and a major misconception is that a fuel pump with just go...but i have seen more times to count when a gm fuel pump will run when cold and shut down when it heats up...check your fuel pressure at your fuel rail...but im willing to bet money its your fuel pump...best of luck

What is the best way to remove and change the alternator from a 2001 ford focus es wagon? Thanks for solutions!?

While i have encountered cars where the procedure is more involved, usually it goes like this.

Remove the belt, to remove the belt, you find the belt tensioner, and bend it back so it no longer is pulling the belt tight, (the belt tentioner is basically a small spring loaded arm, with a pully at the end, that using the force of the spring will pull the belt tight around all of the pulleys) with the belt loose, you can remove it by hand from the maze of pulleys. Sometimes there is a square hole in the belt tensioner that is meant to accept a 1/2 inch drive ratchet, and other times there is a hex nut that you put a socket on to twist the entire tensioner arm.

With the belt removed, you can simply unbolt the alternator, and re bolt the new one, you will of course have to unplug and replace a single wiring clip from it also.

Once the new alternator is bolted on, you can snake the belt around all the other pulleys the way it should go save the belt tensioner pulley, holding th belt in one hand, and opening the belt tensioner with a tool using the other arm, slip the belt back onto the last pully.

Lastly plug back in the wiring clip to your alternator, close the hood, and your done, alternator accomplished

Anyone know how to make the plug stay in a alternator if the plug is broke?

hi i just changed my alternator in my 05 dodge neon, during the instalation i broke the little %26quot;tab%26quot; on the plug that holds it in the alternator. so now it wont stay in therfore the alternator wont work. i guess my question is does anyone know how to make the plug stay in without that lilttle %26quot;tab%26quot;. can i stick it in there then put like silicone to keep it in? any feedback would be great thnx
Anyone know how to make the plug stay in a alternator if the plug is broke?
sounds so simple....i've done something similar...if you don't have money for, or just can't find another plug, try....Electrical tape, the black stretchy stuff..it will wrap around and stretch tight to hold the little plug end in place

My simple repair has lasted for years...hope it works
Anyone know how to make the plug stay in a alternator if the plug is broke?
    go get another plug.

    and solder it in.......

do it the right way once!

and never have to do it again
Above post is correct. Buy a new end plug, they're cheap enough. Put about 5 minutes of labour into it and you won't have to worry about it again.
you can replace the plug on it most parts stores carry these on their help line of automotive parts, that's a common problem for those to break off,you might be able to use some sort of glue or silicone on it but it would be just as easy to replace it and be done with it,this way you don't have to worry about it coming off, good luck on it,

How can I change the alternator belt on a rover 420 diesel?
What you need to do is look at the top of the alternator, there are two bolts that hold the alternator tight. Loosen them first, then there there is a long tentioning bolt under the alternator. Loosen this and then you can remove the belt.

    Ja.

How do you change the alternator belt on a 2002 Kia Sedona?

Go to autozone.com and you can get some basic information on your vehicle. Chances are you have a serpentine belt that runs everything. They're not difficult to replace as long as you follow the routing diagram in the engine compartment (usually a sticker located on the core support near the radiator or on one of the belt covers) and have a wrench that will fit the idler pully. If you're not mechanicall inclined, take it to a mechanic.

Same way you do for any vehicle. Take off the battery negative terminal, remove the drive belt, remove the wires going to the alternator, take out the bolts and remove it.

    System for a 2002 ford F150 Alternator/Battery Question?

Im adding a system to my truck. Im going to be running 2 12 inch subs with a 1000W amp. Im also changing the speakers in my door to run off a 600W amp. Would i need to change the alternator? If not whats the max power I can get.

Dr. Douchebag, you certainly live up to your name, now go learn about car audio.

Your listing a 1000 watt amp and a 600 watt amp, I am going to go with this, your talking about peak wattage which means nothing, rms wattage is what is needed to be known here. Which is generally about half of the peak wattage, so you have a 500 watt rms amp, and a 300 watt rms amp. Both of those amps will be fine with your pick up.

I have to change my alternator every time i go muddin.?

my alternator is located under my battery. every time i go muddin and it gets wet i have to change it. im not sure what i should do about it cause not muddin is out of the question. i was goin to put a splash guard but it wouldnt help much cause of the location of the alternator. i was told i can use silicon spray on it. would that be a very good idea?

Try to keep the silicon spray off of it. It's shorting out, but it'll need to %26quot;breathe%26quot;. Even though you don't want to, I'd say not to go mudding any more in it. Save up some money and get something different to mud in.

Most cars have a idler / tension pulley. Using a box wrench pull it away to release the belt. Re-route the new belt, pull that pulley back again and let it tighten up against the new belt. Sorry if I can't describe it in words very well. It really is very easy.

EVERYTHING IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU AND SHOULD TAKE ABOUT 20 MINUTES AT THE MOST.

Battery keep running down on 96 Chevy. Had alternator changed. Battery showing 10 volts after it was charged.

Had both battery and alternator re-tested. Can't understand why the battery keeps running down in 30 minutes. Autozone said it may be the cable from battery to alternator. Autozone does not sell them. Where can this be found and how much?

What could be the problem. Need cost estimate.

Just had intake manifold and timing fixed
Battery keep running down on 96 Chevy. Had alternator changed. Battery showing 10 volts after it was charged.
YOU NEED A BATTERY. If it's only showing 10 volts then you dropped a cell because it's a 12 volt battery.

In other words. The inside of a car battery is actually 6-2 volt battery's in a row. So one of the 6-2 volt battery cells is junk. So now the total battery output is only 10 volts instead of 12 so the whole battery is now junk.

Sometimes like right after a jump start or charge the bad cell will pop back to life but then go dead again while sitting. That is why it may have passed the test at Autozone. Then, on the ride home the bad 2 volt cell drops again.

    Battery's do wierd stuff.
Battery keep running down on 96 Chevy. Had alternator changed. Battery showing 10 volts after it was charged.
I do believe this is the cable from the battery to the alternator or from the battery to your starter. Check at a Carquest if you have one local. they should have it if not check at a chevy dealership they are bound to have it in stock. It should run you around 20 bucks.
FrankieC has it and I don't think the person at autozone was much help if after a charge you only get 10 volts because a good battery will read 12.4 to 12.6 volts. You need a new battery. Then again you replaced the alternator and if it wasn't the correct one it may not charge the battery back up but I still say a new battery because of the voltage reading you are getting.

96 mustang changed the alternator yesterday the...?

battery is about 1 1/2 years old but now the battery light on dash is going crazy and battery looks hot and a little smoke. Checked alternator it is installed right what now??

Take the alternator off and have it bench tested at your local auto parts store. Also take the battery out and have them charge and test it too. Sounds like either the voltage regulator is bad and overcharging, or the battery has a shorted cell.
    Mustang changed alternator and ........?
    ^^ what he said.

alternator most likely overcharging and boiling your battery.

    Take it back.
It is most likely regulator and that will over charge and the points on those will stick charge until it cooks the battery. That is what i believe

    is wrong with it.

Problems with 93 Lincoln Town car Alternator?

The battery light came on while I was driving so I figured the alternator was out. We changed the alternator and checked the voltage on the battery which was 12.3 volts. The voltage with the car running was 11.7. I then took the alternator and had it tested which was good. I then changed the battery out and had the same results. Does anyone know what the problem may be. Is there a sensor that controls the battery light.

    Thank You,

    Clint
Problems with 93 Lincoln Town car Alternator?
On a 93 you will have an external voltage regulator... it will be the shiny metal box that the smaller wires from your alternator lead to... usually on the fender well as the guy said before me.

    It looks like this...

    http://www.performancepartsinc.com/image鈥?/a>

The reason the light is on is because your system is not charging right... your voltage is too low. With a good battery, and charging system... your voltage reading on the battery should be between 13.8 %26amp; 14.5 volts with the car running, and no electrical accessories on.

The regulator is what tells the alternator to charge, and how much to charge... they cost about $15 USD at any auto parts store, and are very easy to change out. Cheap and easy.

    - Good Luck!
Problems with 93 Lincoln Town car Alternator?
On your inner fender is a voltage regulator, I believe this is your problem.
Well the light could be coming on simply bec there's too much draw on the system or it could be a short someplace or the regulator is shot.. Plus i am wondering if you checked the alternators output voltages bec that is low 11.7 Also just bec it tested okay on their test gig doesn't mean its a good alternator bec its not under a true load. Plus your cars battery should give out about 12volt and from the alternator it should be about 13.5 volts but if its up in the 15volt range the alternator is faulty.
11.7 volts of output is not good at all for this alternator. This is an undercharging rate for sure. All of my cars are putting out about 13.5 volts. Always keep in mind... a 12 volt system needs a little over 12 volts to run the car (AND) charge the battery.. The car does not run off the battery after it's started. It runs off the alternator. A good alternator supplying 13-14 volts, supplies 12 volts to the car and regulates the 1 or 2 extra volts back to the battery to keep it charged. It's simple. An alternator that supplies less that 12 volts is not even running the car... so how can it charge the battery??? I would go get another alternator. I think you got a bad one. (OR) if this ford still has a separate voltage regulator... that could be your culprit. The light on the dash will go out when you get the correct voltage to supply your car.
With the car running the voltage at the battery should of been 14volts. If it was only 12 I would be looking at replacing the alternator. If you were told it should be 12 volts, they were trying to sell you a bad alternator.

How do you change the alternator in a 99 SAAB 9-5?
How do you change the alternator in a 99 SAAB 9-5?
It's a real pain in the ***. It's damn near impossible; the alternator is toward the very bottom of the engine, and it takes a lot of work to get it out. I tried doing the water pump on my 9-5, and I thought that was tough. Alternator is even worse. Find an independent Saab mechanic to take it to. If you really really want to try it yourself, check out the 9-5 bulletin board on Saabnet.

    Good luck!
How do you change the alternator in a 99 SAAB 9-5?
It's not a fun job. When mine goes it will be going to a Saab shop. From what I have read about the job you need to remove the front passenger wheel, take the engine off some of its mounts, and wedge the engine forward (or backward, not sure). Then you somehow unbolt the alternator and have to slide it out through the wheel well. It's in there tighter than a dolphin's butt-hole and that's waterproof. If you don't know what you're doing don't mess with it. Bring it to someone who knows Saabs.
I had to replace the alternator in one of my Saabs and the dealership did it. I'm not sure it is something you want to do on your own.

Need to change Alternator on 2001 Mazda 626 2.0L?

The Alt. looks very tight ,any info from someone who has changed one on this car.Thanks.
Need to change Alternator on 2001 Mazda 626 2.0L?
Spray wd-40 on the bolts and let it soak for a few minutes. Don't use regular wrenches, get a 1/4 or even a 1/2 inch drive, and extension, and the correct size socket, probably a metric size. You may even need a breaker bar to get the bolts off. If they still won't come off, or you are afraid that the bolts will break, then you will need to use an air gun to remove the bolts. Not an air wrench, but a heavy duty air gun (the kind that is used for lug nuts). Be careful when you remove the last bolt, because the alternator may snap in one direction because of the tightness of the belt. Use a crowbar when installing the new alt. Put the bolts in but do not tighten until you put pressure on the crowbar, which will draw the belt tight. When you have the right tension on the belt, then tighten the nuts. Good luck.

    Replacing an alternator 3 times?

I'm looking at buying a 2001 VW beetle...The sales guy said it had the alternator replaced and then recently they had to replace it with another one because he said it was a %26quot;bad alternator%26quot;. How does this effect future auto problems, meaning does this constant alternator changing signal an electrical problem? I'm trying to avoid getting ripped off here.
    Replacing an alternator 3 times?
Just asked my husband who is a mechanic, and he said not to buy the car, because there could be a major problem in the wiring.
    Replacing an alternator 3 times?
either crappy parts or the battery still has a fault

    crappy mechanics most likely
First with Electrical, The Charging System, Take it to a shop and inspect it. They check the battery first by load testing it. Then the charging system and wiring. Try that first. Don't go to a parts dealer, They aren't a mechanic.
VW's are noted for electrical problems,it sounds fishy to me,personally I wouldn't buy it as parts are very expensive.
i had to replace mine 3 time in 2 months six years ago and have not had a problem yet and now the truck has over 210,000 miles. some times they are just bad.
a lot of times the problem isn't the altenator. it sometimes can be one of these things. 1 if battery is not holding a charge then it can hurt the alternator, 2 if the starter is going bad it can hurt the battery then in turn hurt the alternator.

the best thing to do is take it to a local Kwick Kar lube and pay them to check it out. they won't charge much. tell them the problem. also ask the sales guy what kind of alternator they replaced it with. sometimes if you use junk parts or parts from local auto parts store then they are rebuilt junk... ask for the paper work on the alternator so if it dies again you can get one for free.
Unfortunately, modern VW cars do not have a good repair rating from buyers. Seems they just can't make them as sturdy as the originals from 60s and 70's.

I would stay away from this specific Beetle. If they had to replace alternator couple times in such short time, yes, there is probably a short or electrical problem with it. But that doesn't mean that others will be that way. I wouldn't believe the car salesman about a %26quot;bad alternator%26quot; because it's more likely an electrical problem. It's always possible that it's a true story, a bad new alternator, but don't take the chance. You might end up having to pay for another new alternator and they're not cheap. Like many others here, I suggest looking for different Beetle.
If you are buying it from a VW dealer, it's likely they properly diagnosed the problem and replaced the faulty alternator. if not, either find something else or take it to a VW dealer for diagnostics. it will cost a little, but a lot less than repeated alternator failures. Try to work the cost into your purchase deal,if it passes you pay,if not the dealer pays for the diagnostics and repair. I say to use a VW dealer because they are trained in that particular system, and work on VW's almost exclusively

    they see this problem regularly.
that don,t mean nothing. maybe the other alternator was,nt very good so they changed it. that don,t mean you will have to change it.
Sounds like an electrical issue. If I were you, and I have worked in the auto field everyday for 25 years, do not buy the newer beetles, they are nothing but a money pit.
a bad battery will put a constant load on the alternator %26amp; kill it.

But VW had alot of electrical problems around those years.

you can get a report on these electrical problems from VW (free)

by the way how does this salesman know that it was a bad alternator

i'm sure he has documentation !

i have a hunch your right
german cars are known for faulty electrical systems. one alternator is expected but three in a row, i suspect that the problem is not with the alternator only. you do indeed have an electrical problem.

my buddy wants me to change the alternator on his truck, but i have never worked on anything that old..........is it hard to do?
How hard is it to change an alternator on a 1988 ford f 150?
Typically with Ford trucks the older they get the easier they are to work on...sometimes.

The engine compartments tend to have more room, but stuff starts getting a bit rusty and hard to break loose when they are that old. I'd suggest having a can of penetrating lubricant to use on the bolts, and make sure you bring a breaker bar to use on those hard to break-loose bolts.

Otherwise, it shouldn't be THAT huge of a chore.

The very best chemical to remove grease is any cheap carburetor cleaner followed with CRC Brake Clean. The brake clean will remove any remaining scum or residue the carb. cleaner missed. It's best to do this with the motor run so the commutator and brushes inside the alternator get clean as well as the field windings.

No!, do not use a degreaser on the alternator, the copper windings are coated in a petroleum based coating, you will be fine. Wipe up as much of the spilled oil as you can with a rag. The rest of the oil will drip or burn off. It will smell for a while and you will see smoke, but you will be ok. and to answer your other question, it is ok to change your oil hot. it is actually preferred so the oil will drain from the crankcase better and faster. rest easy that you are ok.... have a good evening. • How to change an alternator, or starter?

I have a 2005 Nissan Frontier 2.5 liter 4 cyl. We replaced the battery and it still won't crank. Just wanna know how to change the alternator or starter, and what the prices are to replace them. If anything, i'll take it to the shop, but I used to be a mechanic back in my 20's so I just wanted to find out what I may have to do.
How to change an alternator, or starter?
Wow, how old are you that they didn't have starters when you were in your 20's? LOL

Seriously though, if it wouldn't crank over with a new battery, you don't need an alternator. Check both your battery cables at both ends. Or, if it's not making any noise at all, make sure you're getting power to your starter solenoid when you turn the ignition key to %26quot;start%26quot;. If you need a starter, remove negative cable from battery, remove wires from starter, remove starter from engine. Reverse to install. Most auto parts stores will test your starter for free if you bring it in (bench test), to be sure that's it.
How to change an alternator, or starter?
Check the starter and ignition relays. Also make sure the battery is good. Make sure the car has good ground as well.
This is no joke, but give the starter a light tap with a hammer to free the starter selonoid that is sticking...

    Dr Antony

I just changed my alternator, but my car wont start, when i jump it it stays on for a minute.?

when i remove the battery terminal it cuts off. do you think its the alternator or my battery
I just changed my alternator, but my car wont start, when i jump it it stays on for a minute.?
you can buy a new bad alternator take it back to where you got it have it checked if bad get another but have it checked before you leave the store this time
I just changed my alternator, but my car wont start, when i jump it it stays on for a minute.?
you can pull the altenator and battery and auto zone or checker will check it for free. You might also want to see if you can start it off the starter solenoid. take a long screw and a helper find the starter and there should be two bolt looking things with wires attrached off the solenoid touch the two together with the screwdriver while the helper turns the key.. be careful u will get a spark but it dont hurt you may also want to clean these connections. the solenoid or the starter may be the problem
well on older cars removing the cable would be a sign that the atlerantor is not working sure you have the wires right... and if its a newer model you can really fry the eletronic when you see that little spark jump when you take off the cable when the car is running doing more damage is a no no now you cant do it........ so if it runs drive it to any shop or auto zone and have it tested while its running they can tell you if its working or whats bad in five minutes or less so stop guessing
Usually if the car cuts off after you jump it and have removed the battery cable, it indicates that the alternator is bad. If the car keeps running after disconnecting the battery cable the battery is bad. It sounds counter-intuitive, but generally that's how you can distinguish which of the two parts are bad. Since you just replaced the alternator, maybe the alternator belt needs tightening. Did you take it for a good 30 minute drive after putting a new alternator on, or just let it sit there idling? If you didn't drive it long enough for the alternator to recharge the battery, it won't stay running long. I think you need to check the belt tension %26amp; take it for a good long drive. And how old is your battery? It could be just weak enough and old enough to no longer hold a good charge, even with a new alternator.
STOP PLAYING AND TAKE THE BATTERY TO A AUTO PART PLACE AND GET A NEW BATTERY.

TAKE THE OLD BATTERY IN AS THEY WILL CHARGE YOU TILL YOU HAVE THE BATTERY CORE AND THEY NEED TO SEE IT TO MAKE SURE IT IS THE RIGHT ONE AND GAS IS WHAT??

1993 HONDA CIVIC! Will i need to change the timing belt when changing to a performance underdrive pulley?
if you don't know what the hell your doing don't **** with it.
You cant see the timing belt. Its behind the front cover. If you are referring to the drive belts, I would replace them if they are in need of changing. The timing belt is a bigger job, should be changed every 90k I believe every car differs though.
I have seldom worked on any hondas, however, the use of underdrive pulleys is old hat in hot rodding. You will undoubtably have to change length of your belt on an accessory drive, but I question your use of an underdrive pulley as being related to a timing belt. Unless both pulleys for crank and cam are changed, it would not be possible for them to stay in time, and changing them both would have no purpose as far as power gain. If I have misunderstood your question, please pardon my interuption. If you are changing an accessory drive that is actually driven from the timing belt(is that actually done on hondas?) then there may be a small change in length, all dependent upon difference of the two diameters and how many degrees of the pulley circle it contacts. Using pi (3.14) times change in diameter divided by the fraction of degrees contacting the pulley should give you the difference in length.
You shouldnt have to mess with the timing chain, but you will have to take off the accessory belts (A/C, power steering, alternator) when changing out the pulley. I would advise you to change the belts if it is necessary, but if your alternator is in working order then dont mess with it. Dont fix what isnt broken.
No you shouldnt have to unless it says so when you get the pulley, u should just need a new belt, they should provide it.
your timing belt replacement is an advanced project and you dont need to do it yourself (leave it to the pros). it is easy to change the pullies. just get or rent or find a clicker torq wrench. but it isnt needed. you should get a friend who will help. it will be more fun with an extra set of hands. it shouldnt take you very long and its a good upgrade. good luck and have fun! get any performance parts off the %26quot;bay%26quot; they will be half price...

How do you change the alternator...?

My husband is working on changing the alternator on our four cylinder- 91' chevy cavalier. He is having trouble... does anyone know how to take him through this process...?? thank you.

we would take it to get looked at, but we cant start it.
How do you change the alternator...?
Remove the alternator restraint bracket screws. Next, using a 15mm(I'm not quite sure if that's right) wrench turn the tensioner bolt located on the left side of the engine block. Turn just enough to push back and down. The tensioner should move loosening the belt and freeing the tension from the alternator.

Then, remove all of the screws securing the alternator. Disconnect the electric ground cable from the rear of the alternator. Remove the alternator. Installing the new one is just in reverse.

The belt might be a little hard to get on/off. Don't fight with it, it the belts a little too tight, just loosen the tension.
How do you change the alternator...?
The alternator is normally held on with 2 bolts. It should be as simple as disconnecting the wires going to the alternator and removing those bolts.
I'm not familiar with this car, so I'll pose my thought as a question: Is there an idler that provides tension to the belt? If so, would it be a good idea to loosen the idler in order to make belt handling easier?
take off the old one and put in the new one
you should have 2 bolts on it and a plug-in. disconnect the battery, take the belt off, unhook the alternator, take the 2 bolts out and it should come off.

  • I just changed my alternator and now I have a very rough idle. What's up?

Ok, so my car (a 1999 Ford Mustang with 140K miles) started acting funny yesterday and the battery light came on. Eventually, it died. I had the battery and alternator replaced. A little later in the day I drove the car and now the idle is very low (less than 500 RPM). In fact, it even killed on me as I parked the car and when I had to make a slow turn. However, both times it killed I was able to start it back up easily. I called the %26quot;shade-tree mechanic%26quot; who I let fix it and he says the car's computer needs to be reset. What do you all think? Thanks in advance.
I just changed my alternator and now I have a very rough idle. What's up?
The computer has to relearn certain things. The dealerships have a certain procedure of reving up the engine, on and off cycles so the customers don't complain after they get the car back. All you need to do is drive it around a bit, it will relearn on it's own.
I just changed my alternator and now I have a very rough idle. What's up?
If you like sparks and ruined tools, remove the positive battery terminal.

If you're smart, remove the negative battery terminal instead. (won't short out if you touch the body/frame.

Let it sit for a couple minutes. Then hook it back up.

Look around for a vacuum hose that may have been unplugged from the engine and is sucking raw air.
Sounds like he is right. A lot of times the idle has to be reset when the battery goes dead.
sometimes ive noticed it you tigten the belt to tight for the altenator it strains sometimes leading to low idle well at least it has happend with my mitsubishi
    Timing?
well it could be the starter, have u checkrd that?!
Thank you knowItAll for sighting that mistake, you never remove the positive battery cable when you do a check or maintenance for this exact reason, a short can heat a socket wrench yellow hot in seconds and can explode and kill you. Always remove the negative cable to reset the ECM. Also yes you need to check your engine for vacuum leaks because this is a really common cause for this kind of problem the ECM does nothing with the alternator (other then draw power) so this would not be the first place I would look for problems. If all fo yoru vacuum lines are ok, try checking to make sure your IAC is working properly if the IAC is bad and closed shut, when you lift off the gas, say to make a turn or to come to a stop the engine starves and stalls. This is insanely common with the Ford 3.8L V6
Yah just reset the comp. Thats easy to do. Just disconnect the Red part of your battery and leave it off for a few minutes. GO back and reinstall it and you should be good.

Why wont my heater work after alternator has been changed?

    bad connections.

he hasn't attached the belts correctly.

...best get a mechanic to look at it..
Why wont my heater work after alternator has been changed?
The main fuse or fuseable link probably was blown when changing the alternator.

There's a slight chance the rebuilt alternator is no good.

The heater has no heat, or the blower does not work? Check all the fuses if it's the blower.

Make sure all the belts were put back on. Your %26quot;partner%26quot; may have no mechanical smarts.
Checking fuses is a good idea. Also check for any ground wires that may have broken, or been disconnected. On GMC trucks they put them on the thermostat housing, and if they were not hooked up right, you had all sorts of weird problems.
If the battery light is on, your %26quot;the car now works%26quot; statement isn't as true as you might want to think,

It's probably related to the alternator change. If the battery wasn't disconnected during the change, there's a chance the BAT connection hit a ground and took out a fuse link or fuse. Do the simple checks first - visually check all of the associated wiring and connections that were moved or disconnected during the work, Check all of the fuses and fuse links with a test light. If no concerns are found, put a volt meter across the battery - it should read 13.8-14.2 volts at 1000-1500 rpm's, if it doesn't, the alternator isn't charging.

It seems simple, but I usually have run into problems in the past on Simple Jobs
How Do I change the Alternator Belt on my 2000 Hyundai Accent?
Hyundai did not use automatic tensioners in 2000. You have a tensioner but it is a manual tensioner. You have to loosen the bolt on the side of the tensioner. Then you turn the other bolt counter clockwise to loosen the bolt which will loosen the tensioner. Then you have to loosen the big bolt that is on the other side of the alternator. You may have to take off your power steering belt to get to the alternator belt. Reverse the procedure to install it. GL

How Do I change the Alternator Belt on my 2000 Hyundai Accent?
There should be a belt routing diagram under the hood. You need to pivot the tensioner pulley, this is usually done with a 1/2%26quot; drive rachet or breaker bar. Make sure to get a good mental picture of the way things are, to help you when you put the new belt on.
well most are spring loaded now days one toll only make them much easier really but sometimes it doe take two poeple one to pull and hold while the other removes and replaces,,, only a few will have adjusters that you will need to loosen none are hard
loosen the alternater bolts lift of belt put on new belt pull the alternator back tighten bolts leaving half inch movement on both sides of the belt

When to change alternator and compressor belts?

    Dear All,

I'm about to go about changing my timing belt on my FTO as it has already done 102K before I bought it and the owner didn't previously changed it.

Do you think it would be a good idea to change the water pump and the various belts at the same time?

The quote for the timing belt is already around $1000, which is very costly as the reason is that it is an imported car, ouch!

I need to replace a new radiator to the car which is another about $500.

So what should I choose to add on?

    Thanks.
When to change alternator and compressor belts?
all of the belts have to come off when you change a timing belt. change what ever the manuel says and you'll get another 100,000 miles.
When to change alternator and compressor belts?
It would be a good idea to change all the belts while they're off. An honest shop wouldn't charge any labor to do those because they have to come off during the timing belt job anyway. Each belt should cost no more than $50.

The water pump should always be replaced with a timing belt job. Let's say you passed on replacing the water pump. If it goes out 2 months later, you'll be paying for a timing belt job all over again because it has to come off in order to replace the pump.

Timing belt tensioner, tensioner bearing, idler bearing (if any), front main seal, cam seals and it's not a bad idea to replace the thermostat at the same time. These are all wear items that will require removal of the timig belt if they eventually fail. Most shops will miss at least half of this in an effort to be able to present you with a lower price than the competition. Make sure you call at least 3 shops for prices. Make sure they're quote includes all the items listed. Make sure they're only using OEM parts (aftermarket accessory belts are okay, though). If you allow a shop to use aftermarket, they will more than likely source the cheapest timing belt kit they can get their hands on. Timing belt related items are critical. One slip can translate to thousands in damage.
um if its your timing belt do it as the manuel says if its your other belts check for cracks look at it with a flash light also the alternator last for quite a long time is its working fine leave as is same with your water pump if your car has good heater power than its good but you should do a master tune up which is change Spark plug cables engine oil tranny oil and change fuel filters if it has a rear diff change the oil in it too ummm about the radiator its not that hard to change believe me don't wast your money timing belt try other places that's too much what your gana pay try kragen auto parts, auto zone, pepboys and napa if you need more advice hit me up i can help so i tink..

I am trying to change my alternator but I cant figure out how to loosen the belt.
How to loosen an Alternator Belt on a 1991 Chevy Corsica?
There is a tensioner. It looks like an arm with a smooth pulley on it that does not look to serve any purpose. Put a wrench on the nut on the tensioner and push to the right it is basically a big spring.

    Good luck
How to loosen an Alternator Belt on a 1991 Chevy Corsica?
there is a belt tensioner all you need to do is rent the serpentine belt tool its a long rod and you can have it on an angle to loosen it up enough and have someone take the belt off or just stick a 3/8 rachet down there to listen it up and it should be easy enough to lift up and take it off
Every car has a tensioner. Look at all the pulleys on the belt it should be a smaller one with hole in the middle. If you take a 3/8 inch ratchet it should fit in that hole. You push that down with a lot of pressure and you'll see the belt loosen on the rest of the pulleys. Sometimes it takes two people as you have to push down really hard for some cars and while you push down the other person has to slide the belt off the pulleys. Good luck

Trying to change my alternator belt on my 92 civic dx but cant find the tensoiner?
the car may not have a tensioner, you may have to loosen the alternator bolts and the alternator would move. Then you would have to pry on the alternator to tighten belt when it comes to installation.
Trying to change my alternator belt on my 92 civic dx but cant find the tensoiner?
Behind the lower mounting bolt, aimed at the firewall you should find a 6mm bolt (10mm head) coming thru a block that the lower bolt goes thru. Loosen that off and you should be able to swing the alternator down and remove the belt.
did you look on one of the pullies?

If the old belt looks like crap then change it. While you are at the parts store you can look at one of the repair manuals on the shelf. Before you put on the new belt make sure you spin all the pulley wheels so you know that one of them isn't binding up.

Help, Im in the middle of repairing my 1994 escort in the rain, changed the alternator now belt squeaks?
Replace the belt and check alignment of tensioner too.
Make sure you have the belt tight enough if that doesnt fix it the while its running carefully rub a bar of soap or a candle on the side that touches the pullys.
remember the flat backside off the belt, will run against smooth or flat surface idler pulleys. the tension of the idler pulley should be against the back side of the belt, and pushing down against it. also you have have gotten a little grease or such on the belt, and its trying to slip a little. car washing it will take care of that, but check your belt makes sure it is not fraid or has cracks internally, it may need replaced also.

Can an alternator change blow out a car battery or visa-versa.

Basically my battery died in my 89 Caddy El Dorado. Took it to sears and they replaced the battery and alternator cause it was bad. But to my dismay the digital dashboard no longer lights up any of it. After plenty of arguing no mechanic can fix it, but they have been trying to fix it mechanically. Does anybody no if i replace or take out and put back in the alternator if the dash will light again?
Can an alternator change blow out a car battery or visa-versa.
an alternator can take out a battery but not vice versa. Check your fuses.
Can an alternator change blow out a car battery or visa-versa.
They more than likely blew the fuse that lights your dash when changing your alternator (they probably did not disconect the battery properly before accidentally grounding out the ossitive cable) if you have a fuse guide for your vehicle, often located on the inside of the fuse panel or in the manual, see if it says which fuse operates the dash lights. Or you can just pull out the fuses one by one and see f any look burnt in the middle. This is one of those issues where moraly, they should be responsible, but it would be less hassle to just replace the fuse yourself :-( . Hope this helps ~ Dave ( Oh.. before you go driving around might want to check all of your signals and lights inclusing reverse and brake lights to make sure that nothing else is wronge)
no the reinstalling of the alternator wont fix it. and its possible that if they crossed some wires or the battery posts that it may have shorted the processor for the dash. Not knowing what all they have tested I can only offer a few thoughts. I would replace the relays connected to the interior electrical components as maybe one fried, I'd also check the dash dimmer to see if its damaged. then have the parameters run on the ecm to see if there are any fault codes.

you should first change your set up. 1200 watts for your mids and highs is too much and 1000 for bass its a bit much but really low compared to your highs. fix that first then come back
I have a honda accord 2008 2dr. I dont want to change my alternator. What should i had, a capactior or a batte?
What brand and model number amps? Your car 4 cylinder or V6?
You'll have to change the alternator to a high output one. You want to spend all this money on a capacitor or a battery? Why not on an alternator? And put the more powerful amp on the sub.
i would first upgrade the battery and upgrade your big 3 ground wires...look it up its different for every car. if your lights are going out when you hit bass then u need to get that alternator swapped out after the above. new car = expensive high output alternator. but if im correct, dont listen to the guy saying to switch out the stronger amp for the door speakers because thats obviously (9/10) the max wattage. all he knows you can be running that 1200 watt max amp but doenst know that would equal to about 100 - 200 wrms at 4 or 2 ohms which is a actually a decent setup am i correct??? that 1000 amp would match up ya sub perfectly hopefully its running at 400+ wrms to keep up with your door speakers. if you go it like that your good

How do you change an alternator on a 1993 honda accord at?

You don't take off the boots. You remove the half axle with boots and CV joints attached. I replaced the axles on mine last year. It involves removing the wheel then the large nut that holds the hub on [sometimes difficult]. Detaching the lower ball joint [can also be difficult for the novice or beginner]. Taking out the lower bolt that attaches the fork. Pry the axle out at the transaxle with a pry bar and remove it. Then you should be able to get the alternator out.

Just because you change the alternator doesn't mean the one that you put on is working. It sounds like you either did not hook all of the wires back up. Or the alternator is not charging.
make sure something isnt left on!!!

Sometimes the armature for the starter gets stuck this will cause battery drain.

if the voltage regulator is external. it may be bad and this would keep it from charging the battery
Check the voltage regulator, either that or you have a really bad short somewhere. Check your wiring and make sure that you don't have any bare wires touching any metal.

Why does my alternator keeps burning up?

I changed the alternator on my car and within 4 days the alernator stops working.
Why does my alternator keeps burning up?
Does your car have an external regulator or is it built into the alternator? If it's external, the regulator could be causing it. Could also be a bad battery shorting out intermittently. Lastly, you might have just gotten a defective alternator, it happens. unless this is like your third one in a couple weeks, return it and replace it again. Make sure you disconnect the battery when replacing it, a spark from the hot wire could wipe out the alternator before you even use it.
Why does my alternator keeps burning up?
you've either got a grounding problem or short in the electrical system.

if the voltage regulator is externally mounted from the alternator (on firewall or fenderwell) then it is probably fried and causing the alternator to peg output until it dies.

or....here's a question. you have a big audio system in your car?? if so and you pound the ground of sound, you are probably greatly exceeding your poor factory alternator output rating....again frying it and your eardrums at the same time.
Your cars is old that is why! Old cars always have problem.,

How do i change the alternator on a 2005 Suzuki XL-7?

I am having trouble getting into where the bolts are just wondering if i need to take anything off or just try it like it is?
How do i change the alternator on a 2005 Suzuki XL-7?
Good luck! I recently changed the alternator belt on my XL-7 and it ain't easy. mine is an 02 and unless they have changed it - the pivot bolt at the bottom of the alternator is a Torx 50 female head. So you need a Torx 50 male (it looks kinda like a hex key with pointed corners) 3/8 drive and the right extensions to get to it. Make sure the torx bolt orifice is clean of debris and get the socket key fully seated - or you run the risk of stripping the bolt head out. if this happens you are pretty screwed and will probably have to pull the radiator to get access to the bolt so you can drill off the head. Or chisel it off or torch it to anneal it. you might want to consider actually taking it to a Suzuki dealer - and hopefully they wont screw it up.

92 Camry, how hard it is to change the alternator on my own?

92 Camry, how hard it is to change the alternator on my own? and what tools do I need?

    Thanks a lot.
92 Camry, how hard it is to change the alternator on my own?
wow, about the easiest alt in the world. you need a 14mm, a 12mm and a 10mm and a mechanical mind. thats bout it. Just remember to disconnect your battery before you decided to jump into this..... somehow Im worried about this situation. (IM NOT RESPONSIBLE WHEN YOU SHORT OUT YOUR CAR ;) )
92 Camry, how hard it is to change the alternator on my own?
You'll need a set of metric sockets and/or combination wrenches. It's not all that terribly difficult. The hard part will be getting the belt reinstalled; that may take some extra work. When you get the new alternator, check to see that it is the same as the one you're replacing, then make note of where it is located on the engine. Loosen the bolts, (disconnect the wires first), then slide the old alternator toward the engine. Remove the bolts and remove the alternator from the bracket. To install the new one, simply reverse the process. It's not rocket science, but it does take some work and thought before attempting the job. Good luck!
it shouldn't be too hard. i suggest taking some digital pictures before you take it apart. if you can't do that make notes of where wires and bolts are connected. i like to make a list of everything i do and every part i take off. when i put it back together i start at the bottom of the list and work back to the top checking things off.

I've just changed the alternator on my car and the volts light goes on when i accelerate, why?

when i accelerate my volts light starts to flicker, and when i go above 25mph it stays on. ot times when i stop for a light the volts light will go out, then back on when i accelerate.
I've just changed the alternator on my car and the volts light goes on when i accelerate, why?
Could be numerous things, bad battery, bad cables, loose connections, defective alternator, your best bet is to take it to a reputable repair facility for a proper diagnosis rather than throwing parts at it hoping for a cheap fix.
I've just changed the alternator on my car and the volts light goes on when i accelerate, why?
    your belt isnt tight.

Tighten it up, should stop doing that.

When you accelerate, the belt slips more.
probably a faulty alternator, could also be a faulty voltage regulator (depending on the year/make/model of your vehicle)

Even new in box parts can be junk. Always have the parts store test the new items before you leave.
Sounds like a defective part. If you replaced the alternator with one that puts out more amps than the original, your cars electrical system is trying to prevent an overload into the car. A safety device you could say to protect it from being fried.
Your serpentine belt is loose. Get a new one.
I agree with Dave on this one but here is a hint advance auto parts has nothing but rebuilt alts. and starters I would in the future have it tested before leaving the store plus if your belt was loose it would squeal loudly when lights and accessories were on but it's always good to put a new belt on when changing the alt that way you could keep an emergency spare belt in the trunk in case of need I do and i have not regretted it.. ps im not knocking advance auto they really do have great parts but some not tested..
It sounds like your charging system is operating wide open all of the time. Use a voltmeter to check the voltage at the battery while the car is running. The voltage should be between 12.5V-14.5V. Then, see what it is when the engine RPMs are around 2500. If it goes above 14.5V, your voltage regulator or related circuit wiring is to blame.
It's sounds like you belt is slipping or glazed. Or maybe you just didn;t tighten it enough.

  • My BMW X5 starts up, revs to about 1200, then slowly dies down. Changed alternator, battery, and fuel pump...?

I changed the alternator battery and fuel pump but the car still wont run smooth. My diagnostic check says that I have an idle control valve malfunction and a crankshaft position sensor thing. Would any of this be the reason for the car starting, then slowly dying? The mechanic I took it to said it was the fuel pump then the alternator then the battery so I have wasted a lot of money so far.
My BMW X5 starts up, revs to about 1200, then slowly dies down. Changed alternator, battery, and fuel pump...?
you scanned a bad idle control valve do why did you not change it??? The valve may be worn and stickey and in need of replacement.

How do i change an Alternator on a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero (3400)?

the battery light comes on sometimes,, i just installed a brand new one myself so im guessing its the alternator.
How do i change an Alternator on a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero (3400)?
disconnect the battery cable first,,then remove the serpentine belt,,and remove the bolts that hold the alternator on,,also remove the wires from it,,installation is the reverse of this,,be care full and don't break anything like the wiring connector on it,,other wise its not that hard to do,,just take your time,,and you can do it,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.
How do i change an Alternator on a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero (3400)?
Handy tip: shut the car off first before working on it
first i would take it to automotive store like advance or autozone and have them check the alt to m,ake sure that is what it is. Then on that car if that is what it is you have got alot of work ahead of you, i believe that the alt is all the way on lthe bottom next to the fire wall and if so then you have to jack the car up and put it on jack stands and then take the floor jack and put it under the sub frame and put some tension on the sub frame and then lo sen the front sub frame bolts and then take out the back sub frame bolts and then take the floor jack and let it down real slowly until you have enough room to take the alt out from underneath putting the new one in is just reversed

I have a 1998 pontiac sunfire & changed the alternator. Now it does;nt start radio & ligths work not starter?

I have a 1998 pontiac sunfire %26amp; changed the alternator. Now it does;nt start radio %26amp; ligths work not starter?
if the vehicle is a no crank situation, it may have disturbed the passlock module of the system, this can cause that exact sitation. or your starter is dead.
I have a 1998 pontiac sunfire %26amp; changed the alternator. Now it does;nt start radio %26amp; ligths work not starter?
You might want to start with the battery on the alternator. Recheck all the wire that you might have disconnected and the other wire around the alternator. You might have pinched a wire.
remove starter, bench test it,and take from there.

Pontiac Sunfire Doesn't Start After Battery & Alternator Change?

    Thanks

There is no mechanical locking system to prevent you from turning the key to the on/start postion

*if the key drum will not rotate after entry into the ignition it could be that the wheel lock pin is mechanically pressed hard against the locking sprocket. This is a rare condition to come across but it does happen. Try applying turning pressure one way on the wheel and attempt to turn the key. If that fails try the other way. Still not luck? Try varying the key depth in the ignition. Will the key turn back for the accessory power on mode?

*if the key drum will not turn at all and is in the on/start position and you cannot remove the key, try varying the key depth in ignition. A failing keydrum will not always hold the key at the depth required to allow movement. Kind of a partial lock position. IF this is interpreting our latest note correctly and pushing the key in more and backing the key out fails to work try some wd-40.

I had a 1996 pontiac sunfire %26quot;burn out%26quot; its ignition switch due to a design defect. I don't know if your year was affected by this.

Some things to check out assuming the car engine turns over but does not start.

*Do you hear the fuel pump run when the ignition is first turned on? Should be anywhere from a a half of a second to two typically. Lower the seat back on the rear seats and see if you can hear a mid frequency hum. If no, repeat with someone else turning the car on while you stand in back passenger side, fuel fill area.

*Someone hear mentioned the ignition coil pack. You can disconnect the plug wires from each plug and test with an old spark plug. One at a time with someone else %26quot;starting%26quot; the engine hold the wire from the thick rubber boot with a spare spark plug in it, connected. Touch the screw thread portion to a ground (metal) strap or bare metal under the hood. If you see a spark between the center of the plug and the metal strip connected below the screw threads then you can be reasonably assured there is spark. This is a good time to make sure the spark plug wire connections are clean from the coil packs to the spark plugs individually.

*There can be several faults with electrical wiring alone that can cause the TheftLock light to pop on and prevent the engine from starting.

Now with the following suggestions are hard to diagnose because the car was electrically dead for a long enough time to clear out any service codes that may have been stored. before the battery was swapped out. A good mechanic, who is hard to find would scan the computer for stored codes. The Sunfire computer systems will turn the service light off after a period of time but still retain the code. Anything along these lines from here on out is less likely but difficulty to diagnose properly without the engine running on its own power. Sensors are non-returnable items.

*If the engine was running particularly rough and sluggish before it stopped there may be a problem with your air intake manifold gasket. Typically problems here are noticeable enough when one cylinder's seal is lost you seek service. If the symptom described here is reminiscent of your issue, you can try holding an unlit blow torch near the intake manifold off of each cylinder where the intake meets the head. If the engine behavior changes and it sounds like it is stumbling, trying but failing to start you have found your problem. Do this test outdoors and a max 15 seconds per spot, 1 minute between each time.

*The Mass Airflow Sensor (typically called MAF sensor) could have an electrical fault internally or along its wiring. The car may have been hard starting.

is the theft light flashing on the instrument panel cluster after you try to start it? that would indicate a theft deterrent problem. don't panic, leave the key on for 10 minutes after attempting to star it. that flashing theft light will turn off after 10 minutes, then turn the key off, for 5 seconds, and start it. if it is a theft deterrent concern, it will start. if it's something else, well, back to the drawing board.
If you have some mechanical knowledge follow this: see if you have battery voltage at the big wire on the starter. NO- possible fuseable link at the starter. YES- check voltage on small wire with ignition in the CRANK/START position. Now to cont. with the %26quot;NO%26quot; and yes to good fuseable links. Check your battery wires. Both pos and neg. Check the ground wire and make sure it has a good connection. Make sure you have voltage at the battery wire (big one). If yes to those then on to the small wire... If no on the voltage with in crank position the most likely it is the starter switch. Go to the parts store and buy one to see what you have to replace. Most likely it won't be the key switch. Any other questions or help contact me and I will try some more advice. Good Luck..and have fun
battery not hooked up correct or not tightened the cables.......or loose wires on alternator

    or dead battery installed

    charge the battery

Does it turn over, if not check and see if they hooked up the battery the right way. And check all the fuses, they may have blown one when they where working on it.
not enough info. did it start and run before the husband and bri-law-adventure.
Well if it doesn't start perhaps you should check the starter???

  • Do i need to change the alternator? in order to get it to work.?

i have a 2001 pontiac sunfire gt and it has its stock alternator. it came with a system %26quot;Monsoon%26quot; but it doesnt have subs. so im thinking of putting an extra amplifiers 1000W and 2 12%26quot; subs. will i need to make other mods like changing the alternator or getting a capacitor?
Do i need to change the alternator? in order to get it to work.?
no new alternator but a capacitor for a little car like that would help out alot. for 1000 watts get a 1 farad cap.
Do i need to change the alternator? in order to get it to work.?
U shouldnt have to change it,,,check the rms level of what UR using and that'll show u whats WHAT ,,,only use a cap if the RMS on the speakers and amp is over1000 watts RMS....
A power capacitor is the way to go.
u don't have to change it to work because i have a 1500 watt hi phonics crunch amp with 2 12'' kicker compvt's and it hits extremly hard and the only thing i had to do was add a capacitor because it made all my dash lights blink with the bass and ever since i did that it does not hit with the bass and not to mention that i never had any problems out of my car before or after the capacitor besides the lights.
    Whats the TOTAL RMS?

Probably needs to be upgraded if your total RMS is up there close to 1,000RMS.

I have a 65A alternator and it handles 500RMS and no more.

Oh and just to let you know, all the other guys have NO idea what they are talking about. A capacitor just makes things worse by putting MORE stress on the alternator.

How do i change the alternator on a 1995 grand am gt?

Can't afford to take it in to a shop.. Thanks.
How do i change the alternator on a 1995 grand am gt?
Take the old one off...bolt on the new one, reattach the belt...

It's on of the easiest parts to change.

The guy below is right about the belt tensioner. It's a bolt your turn that moves and loosens it. Do this with a friend, it takes some muscle.

I say this because if you do it with one hand on the wrench and one to grab the belt, it can slip and you can smash yourself in the face with the wrench. There's tension from a spring to keep the belt tight, and that same spring is what you need to compress to loosen the belt.

There's usually a little picture of belt inside your hood. PAY ATTENTION to how it goes on though, it has to be weaved through the right way or your car won't work.
How do i change the alternator on a 1995 grand am gt?
Go to parts store and buy a Haynes manual for your vehicle ($20) It will give you step by step description on haw to replace alternator and also on how to remove belt.
theres a belt tensioner. You have to loosen it and just pull the belt off. really simple.

How do i change my alternator?
I am doing this very same thing on the very same truck..lol

I have a '99 silverado 5.3 extended cab. first you need to remove the hot cable from the battery. Next remove the 2 bolts from the bottom of the alternator. Next unbolt the battery and power wire cables from the back, making sure to put the bolts back so you don't loose them after you take the wires off. Next take a 1/2 rachet and socket to the belt tensioner nut on the pulley and turn it counterclockwise...this will loosen the belt and allow you to take the belt off and remove the alternator. Once removed...reverse the process looking at the belt diagram on the fan shroud to get it back right. You may have to take a flat blade screwdriver and remove part of the air intake to get to the tensioner, which is on the left side of the engine while facing the truck...

    Good luck....it's easy.
How do i change my alternator?
first remove the battery connection..maybe the positive cable..then there is still a set of bolt and nuts at the bottom.

I think the screws that you are referring to are the alternator case screws. You are looking for two or three large hex bolts that are mounted on the rear of the alternator and attached to the mounting brackets of the front of the engine. These bolts are going to require a ratchet and socket to remove from the bracket. More than likely they are 15mm hex bolts and they do face forward in most cases.

Depending on the engine type there will be either two or three of these bolts. Sometimes the alternator case has what is called a dog ear that sticks out from the rear of the alternator case. These are the bolts you need to remove in order to pull the alternator from your vehicle.

The screws that I think you are referring to actually hold the alternator together. These were probably about 4 inches long and went completely through the alternator. Right? You need to replace these before you remove the alternator. You might have a little excitement on your hands if you don't.

Here is some advice about obtaining a new alternator. Get one from the Parts Department at Chevrolet. I have been working for GM for a few years in their parts house, (currently) and as a Mechanic.

The alternators you get from your aftermarket stores are not very good quality. These items are normally pulled from wrecking yards and wholesaled out to a rebuilder which tests them, cleans them, and only repairs what is wrong with them. Then these are sent out to the parts stores and sold as a rebuilt unit with a lifetime warranty. After you have installed 3 or 4 of them you might get a good one.

GM, Ford, Chrysler, and most other Dealership Parts Houses, send the units out to Factory Authorized Service Centers for a complete remanufacturing process. At GM the alternators and starters are completely dis-assembled and all of the internal parts discarded. The only parts that are used again, (provided they meet specifications), are the outer cases.

All of the bearings, wiring, circuits, and internal parts are completely new. But because the outer case was recycled, we are required to call them remanufactured products. Also GM parts all carry a 12 month or 12,000 Mile Warranty from GM. So if the part fails in that period of time, just bring it back with your receipt, and you will get handed a new part.

Just be sure that you show up at the parts department with your VIN so we can get you the correct alternator the first time through.

While you are in there, I would also suggest that you get a new serpentine belt and replace it along with your alternator. Don't forget to check you battery, and clean the terminals and any other connections.

Good Luck, and I hope I helped you out.

I recently changed the alternator on my 96 camry but my car still wont start any advice?

Well did it start before you change the alternator? If it did you burned up something or did not do it right. If it did not start before you worked on it. start at the Battery and check the voltage across the post, you will need at less 10.5 to crank a ford and I am not sure on the other. You can not do any thing with a low battery. either charge it or get a hot battery to jump you can and see if it start. If your battery has voltage, you will need to check to starting circuit. Battery, key switch, solenoid, starter. If you get the engine running recheck the voltage back at the battery, and if the charging system is working you should have at less 13.4 volt. If all of the checks, check out and the car has not started you may have a fuel problem.to work on. Do not forget to check the fuse link in the battery to started, cable
I recently changed the alternator on my 96 camry but my car still wont start any advice?
    We need more details.

Does it turn over, click anything? Do the lights come on when you hit the switch? Can you jump start it?
I recently changed the alternator on my 96 camry but my car still wont start any advice?
Hook up the battery to a vehicle with a working battery, start the car, then drive it at highway speeds for at least 15-20 minutes to let the new alternator charge up the battery.
    The alternator charges the battery...

the battery still has to be good to hold a charge long enough to turn the starter

the starter has to be in good shape to turn the engine

the connections at the battery and starter have to be clean in order to make good contact.......

if it doesn't start, you check the battery first.....
the alternator will not keep a car from starting however will keep a battery from staying charged in order to diagnose the car we will need more information. when did the car start having this problem and what symptoms occured, what led you to believe the alternator was out step by step tell me about your car i will fix ur problem.
when the vehicle does not start you need to start with the basics like is the battery fully charged and capable cranking a vehicle this is done with a load test normally done at your local auto parts store... ok now is your cranking or clicking by now the battery is ruled out so if it cranks its something else and a mechanic should check it out if it clicks it could be either a connection or a starter but you need someone that knows how to test them....
did you have the altenator tested that was removed, and also the battery lod tested or charged, try starting the vehicle with a jump,do you have spark, fuel, and computer command you need to check your basics first, your altenator's job is to run your cars electrical system while runing and maintain the battery charge, dont count on your altenator to fully charge your battery a dead battery can weaken and shorten the life of your altenator.
sound like you may have waisted your time and money replacing the wrong part. is the battery any good? is the starter ok. does the car have an alarm capable of killing the starter circuit? these are just a few things that you need to check.

How long and difficult would it be to change the alternator on a 95 mercury mystique?

    Two hours total.
How long and difficult would it be to change the alternator on a 95 mercury mystique?
It's really a matter of how well you work around cars. It isn't the worst job in the world. Probably take an expert mechanic 40 minutes. The back yard guy can figure an hour and a half. Be real careful and pay attention to where things were before you remove them. Digital photos will help if you got the tech.
How long and difficult would it be to change the alternator on a 95 mercury mystique?
On a 1984 buick skyhawk, about one hour or less. Most alternators mount the same way in different orders from top to bottom, the skyhawks was on top to keep it dry.Usually, you simply loosen the mounting bolts (one pivots, one or two others keep the tension on the belt). Then undo the electrical connections(Do not let them touch and label them to make sure you don't blow the electrical system).Work carefully and thouroly as it is difficult to undo things in tight quarters.Make sure to use jack stands if working underneath, dropping a car on your head will kill you.A rebuilt alternator will cost $50-150 depending on complexity.Make sure it goes back together as it was before, any exposed electrical can start fires.

  • How do you pick out an alternator ?

I have a Honda Accord 96. My electrician says the alternator has gone bad. Of course I don't wholly agree. How do you really know that the alternator needs changing? Is it ideal to get an alternator that closely matches the amperage of the battery? I've heard of %26quot;power%26quot; alternators that do 150 amps to 170 amps, are they really better? My lights are HID, I also have a sound system with an amplifier but without a subwoofer. Thanks !
How do you pick out an alternator ?
The ONLY way to test an alternator is to have a charging system test performed where a controlled load is applied to the electrical system and the alternator output amperage and voltage is measured. Also have the battery load tested to check it's condition, but the one thing that must be know about a battery test is that the battery must be fully charged or it will fail the test. Get a replacment alternator that is the same as the one that came off of the car.

have your car running...remove the ( - ) negative cable that is connected to the battery while leaving the positive + plugged in to the battery. If the car stalls then the alternator has gone bad.If it continues to run then it is fine.If you need one then simply know your cars motor information, make, model and year when picking one up.

Do not take car advice from an electrician when it comes to your car! What does his career have to do with cars????

Call a mechanic and ask if maybe you need to replace your battery with one that puts out more cranking amps.
your sound system probably burnt out you alt.,you need to upgrade to higher amp's output alt.some auto parts stores will check your alt. for free
never disconnect the battery cable on a car with electronics when the engine is running. it can cause a power surge when you plug it back up and burn a sensor or computer.
The ONLY way is to get it tested. A cheap test is to get a volt meter and see what the voltage is when running. First, get the voltage of the batter before running. It might be 12-12.5V. With the engine running, it should be between 13.5-14.5V. Most alternators should be at that area when running..... any lower, it might show a problem.

If you don't have an volt meter, go to your local auto parts store. I know that Autozone can test them in the car while Schucks, you have to remove it. Testing is the only way to know.

Alright, I don't know how many amps your current one is. But I do know, the battery plays a big role in electrical accessories. Buy yourself a good HD batter. My suggestion is an Optima battery...a Yellow top. They can take the 'abuse' of a sound system (depending on how BIG it is).

Upgrade alternators are available for just about anything. Usually a good parts place will list higher amp ones in the catalog or comptuer. If not, fine a local shop (small one) that deals with starters and alternators. They'll able to hook you up with what you need.

    How to change alternator?

my mate's car wont start she had to call out recovery because i was unavailable to go jump her, she did unfortunately get another friend to do it but they managed to melt the leads whoops defo went wrong connecting the leads well cut a story short recovery bloke said she will need a new alternator, what would be the costs of having this repair done at a garage, or how would i go about changing it myself if i were to get the part im pretty niffy with my hands and do quite a lot of work on me own car
    How to change alternator?
Garages can have a right old field day with alternators and regularly do! Charging literally anything up to 拢300!

I wouldn't even get a new unit - get the blown one fixed. They are pretty much infinitely repairable. Check out the yellow pages under auto-electrics etc. There are people in most areas who specialise in just alternators, dynamos and magnetos etc.

They are only a real pain to change on some modern cars where they are buried under other components.

    How to change alternator?
It's fairly simple to change out an alternator. There are typically 1-2 bolts, and 1-2 wire connections (usually a cable held on with a nut on a stud, and an electrical connector). The alternator is usually toward the top of the engine, making it pretty easy to get to.
yes you can do it, but i recommend buying a cheap set of sockets and end wrenches, and from the sounds of your typoaccent, metric.read any instructions in the box.sometimes there are special replacement parts or special instructions.
