My honda accord'97 refuses to start due to lack of power supply to the engine.Do i change the brainbox?

The problem is, it refuses to start in the mornings and after two atempts and it started and worked thru out,it has not started at all on the 3rd morning.I changed alternator belt the 1st time and it started but i guess the issue as comfirmed by my mechanic and electrician is that power is not being supplied to the engine.Water dripped under my left dashboard and some of it got into the brainbox.Again someone suggested the security device i installed in my car was responsible but after disabling it, the problem is still there.

look for corroded electrical connectors on the brainbox and have the car hooked up to an OBDII code reader to see what the errors are.

My 97 accord is doing the same thing.

I myself checked my alternator and it was fine.

all of my grounds were fried but it ended up doing it again after i replaced them.

My only conclusion left is the starter solenoid.

I have yet to replace it but it is the only part left that i have yet to pull it out and replace it, but all of the testing i have done points to the starter.

P.S. there are no OBDII codes for a faulty starter

at the least get another computer off of ebay and install it. it just plugs in and fix the leak. if it doesn't help than take it to a Honda dealer and ask for many electrical tests. power from battery goes to your key. your key completes the circuit to your starter. your starter turns over your engine. there is a break in the circuit. it maybe a simpler problem than your computer. do the easy repairs first.

the brain box that you called it , it is actually on the passenger side . the left side is usually your fuse box . yes , if the security unit is installed and certain areas that they drilled into are not properly insulated . you can get moisture inside . ask yourself , did it do this before you had the security put in??

VW golf. I changed my alternator and the emergency lights are not blinking nor the turning signals. Why?? :(?

Hello everyone. I changed my alternator this morning and now my turning signals are not working nor the emergency lights, but what is so weird about it is that the Button for the emergency lights is red and it stays red which maybe means that there is current. I don't know :) and also the trunk won't open when I press the button. Please if you know what is wrong with it please, please let me know. Thanks!!
VW golf. I changed my alternator and the emergency lights are not blinking nor the turning signals. Why?? :(?
you either blew a fuse or the relay is shot. try replacing the fuse first with the correct amp fuse. if that doesn't work change the relay. If that doesn't work have a mechanic check the switch on the steering column.
VW golf. I changed my alternator and the emergency lights are not blinking nor the turning signals. Why?? :(?
Make sure that you have the battery connections on tight, and that you didn't leave a wire off.

Then replace the fuse that is blown. As if you didn't disconnect the battery first before you changed the alternator you probably blew a fuse.

How to change an alternator on a 89 honda?
On many Hondas what you need to do is remove the motor mount, and jack the engine up to access the alternator. Sometimes, the only access is from underneath, and you will have to put the car in the air on a hoist. Good Luck!!!

I have a 1998 pontiac sunfire We just changed the alternator on the car and we ran the car for a hour to?
That is not a good idea to do with the CS style alternator that your car has on it. You can actually overheat the alternator doing this. If the battery is discharged that alternator is not designed to charge the battery up from discharged, it is designed to maintain a charge in the battery from the slight discharge it gets from starting etc. If you haven't burned the new alternator up charging the battery than you are in luck and you need to hook the battery up to a battery charger and charge it. This is assuming that the battery is still good. You may need to have it tested to see what kind of condition your batter is in. Good Luck!

Chances are you have a bad cell in your battery, Take it to your local parts store like Advance Auto or Pep Boys and they will test it for free for your.

I got some electrical problems on my car and it looks to be the alternator.....how much is it going to cost me to have it changed by a Chrysler dealer????
    Chrysler 300C alternator change?
I am a certified chrysler seal tech %26amp; would say it is very unlikely the alternator, 6 years with chrysler %26amp; never had 1 bad alternator, just a big problem with chrysler unlike gm cars. I am not sure what your electrical problems are but those cars are famous for the battery %26amp; cables corroiding really bad %26amp; hard to see unless you remove the air cleaner assembly. I would check that first.

What can cause my alternator not charge so my windows can go up?

i changed the alternator and the battery checked all fuses
What can cause my alternator not charge so my windows can go up?
Sorry, my friend, but this certainly does not seem to like a battery

    or alternator problem to me.

Sounds more like an elec.supply issue to the switch or a faulty

switch.Maybeso a faulty motor or perhaps the motor is hung.

Here's some hi-tech checks for you to isolate the problem:

    1) After dark or in a darkened garage, turn off ALL switches in

    the passenger compartment (a/c,radio.blower motor,etc.)

    2)Turn ON the dome light

    3)Engine off/ignition on,while observing the dome light,engage

    the drivers window control

If you have power up TO the switch, the dome light should

dim even SLIGHTLY.If the light does NOT dim, then you're

not getting elec. to the switch.

    4)Still with me?

5)Assuming that you have elec.to the switch, try all the win-

    dow controls.

6)If NONE of them work then you've established that the

problem is NOT a hung motor %26amp; IS the master switch.

7)If you only have a hung motor, try giving the door panel

a few good %26quot;thumps%26quot; with the back of your fist in the

widest part of the door, usually in the area of the door

pull cup.(that's where car mfg.s usually locate the motor)

    This often works.

Trust me,while these simple checks may sound really primitive,

they've always worked like a charm for me over the yrs.Beats

the he** out of pulling your hair out.

My money is on the switch, tho. It may only have gotten gummed

up with age or having had something spilled inside of it.Try something like CRC elec. cleaner but make sure that it's SAFE

    to use on ALL switches.

Hope this helps %26amp; good luck to you.
What can cause my alternator not charge so my windows can go up?
Are you sure it's not the window motor or the switch?
if you are positive the window motor is good and has prop[er connections including ground check cables and connections at alternator-battery and starter

Do i have a bad alternator?

i don't know if i have a bad alternator or not. i have a 91 tercel. i started the car and measured the battery voltage with all the loads off, and i got 14.10volts. then after that, i turn all the loads (wiper, a/c, headlights, stereo) and took the reading. what i got is only 12.01 volts. i let it sit for a while but the reading is still the same. the car is feels like it's hard to crank. i tested my altima and my g20 with all the loads on and it gave me 14.20. is it time to change the alternator?
Do i have a bad alternator?
If the reading was 12.01 V over the battery terminals then it sounds as though something is wrong - however 14.10 v off load sounds about right - and means that the alternator has a working rectifier / regualtor / field coil / rotor coils. This starts to narrow things down a bit.

My first thought would be to check for grim conections on the battery - poor connections might well result in this sort of thing - though if so, you would find the voltage HIGHER if you put the meter on the battery terminals than the battery posts (if a poor connection between the two)

I would start the car again, ignore stereo, just use wipers and lights - that's enough. Measure the voltage on the battery POSTS and then on the CLAMPS. Are they the same. If different, clean and tighten them.

If they are the same AND the voltage is below about 13.5, then see if you can take a measurement between chassis and the alternator output itself. Is this higher?

If this is higher voltage, then you may have a damaged / broken / corroded wire from the alternator to the battery. OR you may have an external regualtor (unusual) which is dying (also unusual). If the voltage here is also low, then you might need a new one - though probably just need new brushes if you can fit them.

    Mark
Do i have a bad alternator?
    clean the battery connections
    yes
it does sound like your alt is going but you need to check the alt under load and load test your battery.also check for corrosion at all conections between the bat and alt.with the voltage going down like that it probably is the alt

    goodluck
Try remeasuring at a slightly higher RPM than idle. If you have a good battery, and it is charged to 12.5 volts or more after sitting over night, then the alternator seems to be doing its job.
    Sounds like the alternator isn't charging like it should but you should charge up the battery to be sure it's not the problem. The battery could be low enough that when the load is applied the alternator can't keep up with it all%26gt;
Do this test for your alternator..... with the car running..... remove the positive battery terminal..... if the car dies the alternator is bad, if the car keeps running it is good...... thats it. :)
Alternator itself may be OK, check the voltage regulator and the brushes. Cast the eye over things looking for a bad connection too.
    Voltage regulator bad.
Do what the skunk says but make sure not to allow the cable to touch ground or you will need a new alternator.
yout a alternator will send more voltage to your battary wen your using auxillery iiems like light heater etc etc so your battery doesnt go dead while powering these things

    Still having alternator problems?

I've changed the alternator and the battery on my nissan maxim car ran for one day went to go and crank it up and needed a jump, come to find out i've ben driving off my battery and now its drained. Can someone help me out.
    Still having alternator problems?
you need to find out if your alt. is charging your battery. then you need to find out if your battery can hold a charge. autozone does this for free
    Still having alternator problems?
It happen to me check all the ground wires. One has rust or corrosion on it.
Start off by checking your alternator output. Put a voltmeter across the battery, with engine running at 2000rpm and headlights on, should read 13.8 - 14.2 volts. If you don't get this reading you have a charging problem. You didn't say that the alternator and battery you fitted were new? If the battery is not new, get someone to %26quot;droptest%26quot; your battery, bad readings....replace battery. If these check out okay, you may have something switched on that is draining the battery. Check boot light, glove box etc. Alternators can also have faults that drain the battery, put an amp-meter in series with the earth lead. With all turned off, you should get no reading.

How much to change the alternator of a 89 Volvo 740?

parts and labor will vary from area to area, used parts, new parts, reman parts? need more specifics, labor should be about an hour, a reman alternator goes for about $250.00
How much to change the alternator of a 89 Volvo 740?
There is little white thing in the back of Bosch alternator called %26quot;Voltage regulator%26quot; You go to auto shop and pick it up around $50. You undo the two small screws, take out the old one and install the new voltage regulator. It takes 15 minutes.

Bosch alternator should last the life of the car as long as you replace the voltage regulator every 100K or so.
How much to change the alternator of a 89 Volvo 740?
It should be about $200-250 for the alternator and a half hour of shop labor. These are so easy to change you could do it yourself.

And there is no alternator in the world that can last as long as a 740. These cars can last 500,000+ miles, enough to completely wear away the brushes on any alternator.
    while i use bosch new and re-man parts all the time, a now non gm company,%26quot; REMY%26quot;

is re-manufacturing all makes of alternators. this is the surviving half of delco remy after the %26quot;delphi%26quot; debacle, these units have proven their reliability and wholesale for volvo's around 80-130 us dollars. these are a significant saving over genuine bosch, and have a decent warranty

    hope this helps

I change the alternator and i still no charger?

on but real dim. this is an 86 buick century
Just changed the alternator and had the battery fully charged, now the battery light on instrument panel is?
Start with the basics. Make sure the belt is tight, esp.if the light goes out with increased rpm. Make sure the replacement alternator is the right one. You may need to use a voltmeter/ ammeter on sort this out since you may have a slight power drain (short) somewhere. Make sure all connections are tight on battery and alternator. Feel wires around connection areas to see if they are real hot, indicating excessive resistance. (Like a connector that has only two little strands of wire taking the whole electrical load). If the battery has only been recharged, but not verified with a load test, do that. Check the site below for a systematic approach. Hope this helps

How do you change the alternator on a 98 opel astra?

They are easy but really that is if you have a hoist!!! If not then you'll have to jack the car up on the right hand side take the wheel off take the side cover off, get underneath and you see the tensoiner pulley get a 15mm spanner. Grab something like a hard peice of wire push the tensioner away from you and you'll see a little hole that you'll have to put the wire through to hold the tensioner in place....when this alligns with the hole behind it....oh use a torch so you can see and first and foremost i forgot to mention do this first DISSCONNECT THE BATTERY from the negative terminal. Draw a little diagram of how the belt goes before taking it off so you remember how it goes back on. Take the belt off.

Now you'll need special torque sockets and a 3/8 drive ratchet and a long and short extension. Torque socket i think is a 14 or somewhere close to that, there's one at the top where you can get at and one at the bottom you'll have to get at underneath. Use a torch so you can see as you'll need good light to see what ya doing. Once dissassembled you''ll see the main power wire use a 10mm spanner to get it off and the regulator connector press it in and pull it off it's the big grey connector!!!

When putting the new one back in connect everything back up put the top bolt in first so when you get underneath you can pivot the alternator into the whole don't do the top bolt up just leave it loose so you can pivot the alternator to find the hole. Put everything back on bolts, belt, and connect the battery last.

By taking off the negative or ground terminal off rather than the power or positive terminal this won't create a spark when putting the negative terminal back on. The spark can actually ignite the gases in your battery and cause it to explode i've seen this happen before my mate when connecting a battery put the positive terminal on last and it exploded on him he was in hospital for four days as his face was badly burnt from battery acid!!!! So just dissconnect the negative terminal!!

having the same problem. Now no matter what I do the battery voltage want go above 11.83 while in the car but the other day a mechanic charged it up and said the battery and alternator were fine. I found a %26quot;1%26quot; fuse where a %26quot;10%26quot;fuse should be and was wondering if that could be the problem or maybe a fusable link.
2007 ford focus.had alternator changed 5-22- 09 with new factory one. Last week my car started?
the alternator should be charging at 13 volts running. If your checking the battery in the car while it is off then 11.83 is a little low but around 12 so I would put a load tester on the battery to see if it holds. If your battery is testing 11.83 while the car is running then I would take the alternator back and exchange it.Alternators now days have a built in voltage regulator and I have had them test bad right out of the box.
2007 ford focus.had alternator changed 5-22- 09 with new factory one. Last week my car started?
It's the phrase %26quot;in the car%26quot; that leaps out at me here,do you mean the cars voltage display?I'd check charging voltage and amperage with independent meters,if they agree I'd suspect the battery has a high internal resistance.to test replace the battery with anything they'll fit and recheck the output,if it scales higher, the faults in the battery cells, junk it.
Just go to Sears or Auto Zone. They will put a tester on there that will check the alternator, battery, starter motor current draw, regulator and check for shorts. Don't worry about it until you have these tests done. The whole test procedure should take under 5 minutes and should be free or very very inexpensive. Don't go to Meineke or Midas or Goodyear or anyplace like that.
if the fuse was not blown then it was probably not the problem however it is good to put proper rated fuse in there

check for corrosion on all the wire connectors under the hood at the alternator and at firewall
The size of the fuse shouldn't make an differents, you might have the wrong size alternator, could be to small.
Step one buy some water, step 2 put it in the oil step 3 start the car step 4 buy a Nissan.

1992 maxima shell with a 94 motor change the alternator the car jumps from power to comfort how do i solve?

This, in my opinion, has nothing to do with the alternator. Either there is a short in the wiring or you transmission computer (this car has two computers one for the engine and one for the transmission) may be bad. Are you certain that, nobody spilled any water on button. Because that may also cause some problems. Good Luck!!!

    So I had a bad alternator...Changed it and ......?

yes it was refurbished but now the car wont start again and it doesnt sound like the battery or the starter it sounds like the alternator is dead again!! could it be just bad luck with getting a bad refurbished one or is something thats causing it to die. its a 1990 ford bronco2
    So I had a bad alternator...Changed it and ......?
only way to tell is to get a charging system check and it will tell if the alternator is bad, autozone will check your system for free, it's not unusual to get a bad rebuilt alternator.
    So I had a bad alternator...Changed it and ......?
Sounds like an autozone duralast part, who knows what it is. Get it to a shop and have the charging system inspected by a pro, that is common sense.
    Something is killing the alternator.

Do a diagnostic and don't replace the alternator until you find out what is killing it. Could be something as simple as the voltage regulator or the battery itself or a bad wire or a bad cellinoid switch or a fly wheel with broken teeth or just electrical

Don't panic though. This is typical of a ford. I used to drive a ford school bus in the 1970' and it always stopped on me. The mechanics knew what it was every time, They'd lift up the hood and replace it and I would drive on.
The battery is the reason it wont start. an alternator just recharges the battery. Think of it like this you battery is a lake that you car needs to drink from. Your alternator is the stream that fills the lake. you need to fill the lake. have your battery charged and load tested at a auto-parts store. if it is good then have the alternator tested. You must have a good battery to test the alternator.
okay okay okay, Your truck would not start one mourning, Right?

1st. The alternator has nothing to do with your truck not starting. The alternator only charges the batt. There is a few things that will not allow you truck to start. Bad cable to the starter? Bad ground? From the starter? I'm not very familiar with fords but do you have a separate relay to the starter? Does you Bronco have solenoid that's not attached to the starter? Check there before replacing you alternator.
an alternator wont stop it from starting up, a bad battery will cause that ,the alternator will kill the battery in it and cause it not to have any power, but if it wont start with a jump start something else is wrong with it,a bad alternator will drain a good battery in just a few hours, you can get a bad one from a rebuilt so this may be whats causing you to loose power to it,take it and have them check it and the battery to see which one is causing the problem, good luck.
...or... you may have a short in your line somewhere. When a short happens due to a skinned wire it will arc a bit. This causes an enormous amount of heat. Smell for plastic smell after you have the car shut off for a bit. Follow your nose and you'll find the short.

Slippery clutch and alternator change, what next ? on toyota pick up 1983 lost motor power?
    Hi,

the older Toyotas are a bit notorious in the transmission department, especially if you are a bit %26quot;heavy-footed%26quot; with them. They don't like it.

If the clutch is slipping %26amp; squeeking on a bit, then a new set of internal discs should do the job. Yet do not be persuaded that it a big dismantling effort. I have done it in the Mid-East at the roadside, with a bit of assistance in around 90 minutes

Of course, it may be something else. Does it go backwards rapidly without moaning? If it does, then forget expensive gearbox problems. Probably.

Not an expert mechanic, more of a power station bod, but I hope that helps.

Is my alternator (cheapest one) in trouble with a 1200W amp?

i just recently changed my alternator. i let my cousin fix it for me. knowing him, he probably skimped and went for the cheapest alternator you can get. this being on the back of my mind i cant help but wonder if my 1200w max amplifier will affect my alternator. does it get affected at all. Honda C-RV 1999 is my vehicle. Thanks in advance
Is my alternator (cheapest one) in trouble with a 1200W amp?
You should have at least a 100-amp alt. with anything over 1000-watts, the stock one will be stressed some and just have to work a little harder. Just do not crank the music a lot with out the car running, then the alt has to do over time when you start it and still have it cranked and it having to charge the battery at the same time. Next time it goes, if it goes, get the 100-amp alt. Good Luck.

    Problems since alternator changed?

had my alternator replaced about one month ago. unfortunately my mechanic on vacation now. battery replaced within last year. now battery indicator light goes in and out and when i come to a stop, on occasion, car will die, but immediately start up again. then this morning, car seems to choke (like it was going to die) several times, then ultimately died on freeway. i managed to coast to the side. car restarted immediately. was told this may be a battery issue? does my battery need recharging/?
    Problems since alternator changed?
IThis is a hard question to tackle, I tend to think you may have an emissions related problem, or perhaps even something simple like an air intake clog. I think your battery light is coming on right before it dies right? could be from lack of charge due to insufficient rotational speed of the alternator. I think I understand what Alan W1 is saying, I have to disagree though. First, you have not mentioned what kind of car it is, if it is a modern car, you really do not want to by-pass the emissions controls by forcing the idle open, this will lead to more headaches down the road. if it is carbureted, this may be an ok fix. It can't hurt to charge the battery, although I don't think this is your problem, since you said it starts back up ok, and I believe it is charging, or you would deffinetly be running that battery down restarting it like you have been. Gotta be a driveablilty/emissions issue I think. At the very least, check the air filter.

    Good luck
    Problems since alternator changed?
You could probably do with having the tick-over rate increased. The adjustment screw is on the side of the carb, in the linkage from the acc pedal. Just turn it a little so your car ticks over ok with no throttle. Should be ok then and keep ticking over when you stop, (as long as the engine is warm enough, of course)

    Hope this helps.
First verify the alternator is still firmly fastened ( the bolts havent come loose) and the belt is properly tensioned. The car started immediately so it seems to hold a charge in the battery so I would keep looking at the alternator. Double check all the wire connections to the alternator...
You might also want to check the Solenoid; when they go bad, they cause symptoms like you described.
I know that some Fords when you replace the alternator you also have to replace the connection plug (wire) to the alternator.

And yes. If he hasn't it will mess the battery up and do what you described. ( I think it's actually over charging it, that's bad too.)

But now that the new alternator destroyed your battery, you will want to get another one.

    Get the plug fixed first.

  • My car dies while running and won't hold a charge.?

My car dies while I am driving it. The lights dim and it struggles to stay started, then dies after a short time running. Battery was checked at checker and told to be good, changed alternator, still same problem. Night before this happened, my speedometer/odometer stopped working. Good connections on battery cables, alternator is brand new, good connections, and tight belt. Any advice or help? Please? Thank you.
My car dies while running and won't hold a charge.?
Alternator may be brand new but it is very obvious that it is not putting out the right output to power the electrical system or charge the battery. With a good alternator, car should run even without battery. Alternator is either defective or not properly installed.
My car dies while running and won't hold a charge.?
well the only thing that i can think of is it might be your electrical system that is messed up or you might want to try running a full dyignostic check on it it may cost a little money but ive found it to be well worth the money
Check your grond straps and change your battery. I am assuming this is a new car with the voltage regulator integral in the alternator. you might also want to check the wires at the alternator for fraying under the insulation, and the connector at the alternator for corroded connectors. you might also have a short somewhere that's sucking current while the car is ideling. tough one.
If the Alternator is new and You've made sure all the connections are correctly attached, try a load test on the battery, thats probably the problem.

    sounds like no amps.

How do i change the alternator on a Volvo V40 T4? It's a petrol, not diesel?

my answer is try to go at the nearest auto repair shop then check it out, be the expert do that

How do you change the alternator belt on a '97 nissan sentra, how do you adjust the belt's tension?

Some cars belt set ups are very aggravating My suggestion is to go to Advance or Auto zone and get a book on that car and year this will also answer many other problems in the future . That is one of the first things I have always done on every car I have ever owned . It has always been a great investment . To explian all the things that needs to be done and the litte things to look for whuold take way to long to type the information in right now .
How do you change the alternator belt on a '97 nissan sentra, how do you adjust the belt's tension?
loosen the alternator bolts and pry the alternator toward engine block with a screw driver(dont break anything) and slide belt off and put on new 1.....to tighten(adjust belt)u pull/pry alternator away from engine block and tighten bolts back up(some models may have a bolt that tightens belt for u jsut by tightening bolt)
How do you change the alternator belt on a '97 nissan sentra, how do you adjust the belt's tension?
First off, if you are not aware, theres a diagram of the proper placement of the belt around all the points of contact. One of the points of contact is movable, but takes quite a few pounds of pressure to move it, which is why this is easier with two people. (I changed mine myself, by standing on the frame of the car) So basically find the movable one and get something that wont bend, like a long handled wrench (Yes they do make a tool for this but its not needed) that you'll use to apply pressure to move it. Once you have the belt on properly you'll see it just barely too small to get around the last point of contact, but applying pressure to the movable one will give you more slack, and then you can slide it over the last point of contact.

Like i said, it much easier with two people. Good :Luck!
Wow, you have picked one of the most difficult belts out there to chane. Changing the belt and adjusting the tension go hand in hand. You will have to adjust the tension very loose to get off the old belt and put on the new. Than adjust the tension back up. Usually the alternator is the pulley that moves. You will have 1 or 2 bolts facing the wheel well that hold the alternator in place, and one that faces either straight up, straight down, or to the front of the car that you spin repeatedly to loosen the belt. If the alternator does not seem to have any extra bolts on it there will be another pulley just for adjusting tension. If it is this one you will have to jack up the car and access it from underneath. Look for a belt diagram under the hood and see if it shows you the tensioner. Similar set up as the alternator adjustments, one or two bolts that will have to be loosened( not removed, only loose) and then a main bolt that adjusts the tension (again none of these bolts should be removed, all should only be loosened).

'95 galant car battery keeps dying, alternator changed 3 times in the last couple yrs.?

It seems to fix the problem for a while, tonight i exchanged the battery at wal-mart so it could be driven home, Seems odd that 3 rebuilt alternators are faulty? It's my friends car. But I am going to help her change it tomorrow. Can't they test them at O'reilly Auto parts? I've never even changed an alternator before. Just batteries, starters, and stuff. I really didn't want to get involved. but she's a single mom, so I felt like I should at least try. Well ok. Thanks peoples.
'95 galant car battery keeps dying, alternator changed 3 times in the last couple yrs.?
Yes O'Reilly can test your alternator and your battery also the best way is to take the Alt to them and let them test it off the car.

If the Alt has been Replaced three times then the problem might lie else wear . Is the battery fully charged? An alt is not a Charger it is a Mainter and will only recharge a battery about 85%. If the battery is not fully Charged you lessen the life of the battery, and weaken the Alt because it is constantly working to get the battery charged back up. Is there a parisite drain on the Battery? this to can cause premature Battery Failure as well as alt problems, most drains are caused by a switch that is on a light bstill on after the key is removed (most common are the glove box and or trunk light or under hood light, dirty or bad battery terminals can cause the same things. Most people condem a good alt when it's somethang minor causing the problem. Just remember If you replace the Alt and don't fix the problem that caused the failure ,you will replace the Alt again till you do fix the problem.
'95 galant car battery keeps dying, alternator changed 3 times in the last couple yrs.?
ok ok...this is EASY....its not the battery, alternator, starter or any of these things

its a parasitic drain, like having the cigarette lighter in all the time, sucking the life out of your battery...im not saying its the cigarettelighter at all...im saying that something is shorted as someone else said and it is taking power away from your battery

take the positive cable off the battery and hook a test light in line from the battery to the cable...it should light up brighty....now start pulling fuses...when the test light goes out, u have found the source of your parasitic drain
I%26quot;m wondering if this model dosn't have an external voltage regulator. It's uncommon these days for one to have this but if it is then this could be your problem.

I think I would look at all the ground cables....Ground cables are the most common cause of electrical malfunction.

Does she have any add on components on her car...such as stereo or tow package? these are the first things I would look at in this case.

    Hope this helps
Three bad alternators seems unlikely to me.

I suspect a short in the electrical system.

    Mike Honeycutt
First of all, - if they can't check it at O'reiley, -take it to an Auto Zone, they can check it there.

Maybe the alternator isn't bad, (you really did mean alternator, - and not battery didn't you ?) If there is a %26quot;leak%26quot; in system that runs battery down all the time, it can %26quot;wear%26quot; down the to the point that it has very little efficiency ,--due to the fact that the %26quot;crud %26quot;from disintergartion of plates has more or less caused it to not put out enough current to crank the engine anymore! The %26quot;crud%26quot; is called %26quot;sulphation%26quot;. The %26quot;curve ball%26quot; -you may be getting here is the fact that the car is being used so often, that the battery doesn't run totally down, but in fact maybe has 40% of charge- or so when she starts it again. This is %26quot;barely enough' to start the car, ( but the car starts easily!) However it has the alternator charging at a very high rate most of the time, and the battery isn't built fot %26quot;deep cycling%26quot; so often! Deep cycling is when the battery is run way down, -then charged way up,- and then repeated ,-over and over. Even a deep %26quot;cycle batttery%26quot; does not last well, if it is run way down, then charged way at least every 24 hours!

Sorry this explination is so long, but it is nescsssary in order for you to understand what I am really talking about!

Here is what you can do about it! First of all you want to have somebody check out the system (on the car). They hook up ampmeter to battery cable, and see just how much %26quot;output%26quot; the battery has. They will also see how much the voltage is (too high can be damaging, as well as too low! Now having proven the performance of the charging system,-- you want to check for %26quot;draw%26quot; (or leakage of power) from anything that may remain %26quot;operating%26quot; in the car even though the ignition is off (and everything is %26quot;supposed%26quot; to be disconnected- or %26quot;off%26quot;). A simple check is to take a small automotive light bulb and attach wires (soldered on) or maybe even a %26quot;cheap%26quot; 12 volt circuit tester( they cost around $2-3 in most places). remove one post connection from battery (either one will work). Now put the test light between the cable and the battery! If all the doors are shut, the key is off, and all the accesories ore turned off -- the bulb should not be lit! You can check to see that the bulb is working properly if you open the door, -- now the light should light, - (because the interior lights are %26quot;drawing current%26quot;) NOTE: the interior light won't go on, unless the %26quot;test bulb%26quot; is a much higher capacity bulb,-as the power will mostly go through the %26quot;lightest filament bulb%26quot;!

If the bulb burns when everything is supposesed to be off, you can now start pulling fuses, and %26quot;opening circuits%26quot; till you find the culprit! Once you find problem, you can decide what to do about it, (like maybe you can cure the problem by replacing something) or perhaps you can toatlly disconnect,- (if it is not essential for regular use). Also maybe you can change hookup so that it only operates when the ignition is turned on (since using power while the car is running isn't going to affect life of battery much)!

The above checks are useful, as you don't want to change alternator and then find out that you still have the problem, -even after spending more money,- and more labor!

Have been fixing cars since 1949, and my philosphy is to only do the work you have to do,- only spend as much as you have to, (and don't have to do it more than once for any single problem!)

As far as I know there is no %26quot;glory in meaningless repition%26quot;!

By the way, it is a whole lot easier to change an alternator than a starter!
you should check the voltage regulator because it controls the charging system, if faulty it can overcharge the battery causing it to simply put fry. now the other way the fried or old battery can also cook your voltage regulator because the alternator keeps trying to charge the battery, up to the determined level through the voltage regulator, but if it can not reach that level then it keeps trying to charge untill something overheats, like the alternator, voltage regulator, battery, so since they are all tied together you should replace the faulty piece with a reputable aftermarket part with a good warranty , like the Hitachi alternator from canadian tire, with 5year free replacement even if you install it yourself , not the cheapest but like always in the automotive world , you always get what you paid for or just a tad less! good luck, happy motoring!!!!

Should I change out my alternator soon?

My 2000 Chevy Malibu LS has 134,000 miles on it and still has the original alternator. The car still runs almost like new. Should I replace the alternator soon as a precautionary measure, or wait until it goes out?
Should I change out my alternator soon?
I see no reason to replace it as general maintanance. I'd wait until it goes bad. My dads car is on the original alternator after 210,000 miles and 11 years, You should be fine.
Should I change out my alternator soon?
wait, it could never go bad
If it aint broke, don't fix it!
an alternator is not something that is usually replaced as a maintnence item. just becuase it has 134,000 miles on it does not mean that it is going to die. you may have another 100,000+ miles in it

there is no need to replace it at this time.
Wait, the one you put in may only last a year or so.
No need to change it If it is still working, an alternator can last out the life of your car. It a good idea to check the belts from time to time.
there is no reason to change it out. The Chevy engines are really good. I drive a 1994 Chevy and I still have the original alternator in it. So just let it be for now.
if it isn' broke don't fix it. i've got a '99 w/120,000 mi. still gets 30mpg. keep it maintained regularly - fluids, brakes, filters, wipers, tires, are usual wear items. batteries or wishy/washy.
No... wait till you have any problems.... dont fix if it isnt broken.
When it goes bad you will begin to notice dimming dashboard lights, and possibly headlights as well. The engine may drag slower suddenly when cranking to start.

When it really does quit it will drain your battery all the way down too. These are pretty sure signs of inevitable trouble.

You can have an alternator output test done by a reputable auto mechanic. It'll cost a few bucks possibly and may or may not answer your question.

Alternators are made so much better than they were years ago and last really long unless you do a LOT of night driving. Then you might consider getting it checked for output. I have an '89 Caprice that went 200,000 miles before the 1st alternator quit.

  • Kia Sedona Alternator problems?

Hi, we have a 2002 Kia Sedona that has 69,000 miles on it. It was a great vehicle until Valentine's day when we had a blizzard. It was parked in our garage, but the storm was too much, blew snow up in the engine. At first all the %26quot;idiot%26quot; lights would come on, and the headlights blew out. We just thought the lights got snow in them. It did it a second time, so the mechanic changed the alternator. Now, its doing it again! We are so lost and confused...has anyone else ever heard of this?

the alternator whent bad in my moms car and i need to know if i can change it at home or does it need to be taking to a mechanic
How do you change an alternator in 2003 gmc envoy?
Its pretty easy to do. Remove the belt, find the tensioner and there is a square hole in it for a breaker bar or large 3/8's ratchet. Insert the breaker/ratchet and remove the tension and pull the belt. then remove the wires from alt. afterwards pull the 2 bolts. reverse steps to install new alt. The big question is are you sure its the alt and not the battery?

Look for a loose or disconnected vacuum hose around where you worked. This will make it idle like that.
check ur alternator connections. make sure they are clean and tight. and second of all check and make sure they gave u the rite size belt. and ur ac belt is ur serpentine belt. it allows ur accessories to work. alternator. power steering pump, ac, and if u get it running check and make sure battery lite isnt on. cuz maybe ur battery lite isnt getting charged. or test the batter y make sure its holding volts. otherwise u need new batt. or at the worst they gave u a defective alt. but i dont think thats the case. also make sure u made sure all ur batt posts are clean and tight.

take it to a mechanic. it is very complex
How do you change a alternator belt on a 95 isuzu pick up?
There should be one pulley that is just used for tension.it's most always smooth and rides on the back of the belt.put a wrench or whatever you can on it to turn it clockwise and it should be spring loaded. It will relieve the tension on the belt.Pull the belt off and put on a new one.
there are different types of pulley setups on different vehicles. there could be the tensioner pulley setup, as stated in the previous post, but it could also be the older setup. if you buy a haynes manual (or clyner, whichever, i prefer haynes) it will have the pictures showing you exactly what to do, step by step. manuals typically cost less than $20. it is not complicated by any means if youre a fairly intelligent individual with any mechanical sense at all.

Just changed the alternator but the car still shuts off when removing ground post...?

Got a 2005 Ford Taurus, it was having problems and was not keeping charged for very long. When we removed the negative post it shut off. So we got a new Alternator for it and installed it yesterday, But when we remove the negative post it still shuts off. We doubled checked and everything is installed correctly, what else could it be?
Just changed the alternator but the car still shuts off when removing ground post...?
Your car shut off because an alternator needs a small amount of electricity to make electricity. (The field circuit)

The trick of removing the battery cable to see if it's charging went out with old cars that used generators. Removing the battery cable on a car made in the last 20 years is a good way to fry the electronics which can cost thousands to replace.

Start the car and measure the voltage with a voltmeter or multimeter. You can get a cheap one at Wal Mart. It should read 13.5-14.5 volts if it is charging properly.
Just changed the alternator but the car still shuts off when removing ground post...?
First of all, I believe it is not a good idea to take of the negative post of the battery anymore because of the computer controls. That used to be the accepted way to check the alternator, but it is now being discouraged, it can damage your car's systems.

Take the car to the parts store and they should check your battery and charging system for free.
You need to use a DVOM (volt meter) to test and see if it is working correctly, the new vehicles will not stay running when you disconnect the battery like they did in the older vehicles!
i would,nt be doing that too much especially to a car with a computer. it,s probably something else causing it to shut off. it could be the battery that has a short in it .who knows you might have got a bad alternator.you can get bad in anything you buy.

Does the alternator belt make a noise if it's either too loose or too tight?

ok so a while ago me and my friend changed the alternator on my car and afterwards there was this really loud noise coming from the alternator belt. So we tightened it and the noise went away. But after driving around for a while the noise has started to come back, only it's not as loud as it was before, but it's still annoying.

So does this mean that I just havn't found the right setting that it needs to be at?
Does the alternator belt make a noise if it's either too loose or too tight?
they will squeal if loose :)
Does the alternator belt make a noise if it's either too loose or too tight?
More than likely yes. Your not adjusting it correctly,Or Your not getting everything tight after the adjustment. You need to keep the alternator adjusted while it's being tightened whether it be will an adjustment assembly with a tension bolt or the other kind you need to use a pry bar to keep the tension on the alternator while tightening

    the slide adjustment bolt
yep it will make a noise had one that broke if you drive without one you will need a new battery too
no it prabably means that the belt streched a little. try tightening it again and spray %26quot;belt dressing%26quot; on it ($2.99 in any auto parts store). that should fix your squeak
Typically it will squeak if it's not tight enough, You didn't mention weather or not you replaced the belt when you did the alt. So I will assume that you didn't. personally it's my policy to change it need it or not. Odds are while the belt still looks ok it may be deteriated enough to make it squeal,
The belt can make noises if too loose or tight and also if out of alignment. As if a washer was not placed properly when replacing the alternator. Try the tension adjustment first. Do no use belt dressing. You may need a new belt, I would have replaced it with the alternator.
When you changed the alternator it might have been smart to change out the belt at the same time. Recheck the alignment of the alternator belt and see if it lines up straight. Tension is what most people adjust, but the pulleys are not aligned right there are additional stresses to the belt that will premature wear it out.

Also correctly torque the hold down bolts. Hope this helps.
I would agree with the diagnosis that you did not tighten the correct bolts or didn't tighten them securely.

I would guess, as with most alternators, there are two bolts to tighten, one at the arm where the belt adjustment is made, usually a curved piece, and the other where the alternator attaches to the engine, usually a long bolt and a nut, that is the pivot point. keep pressure on the alternator to keep the belts tight as you tighten the bolts. Don't over do it or you can damage the bearings in the alternator.

Why wont my serptine belt stay on after alternator change?

I had my alternator replaced on my 2000 1.8L Turbo VW Bettle and now since that has happened my serpentine belt has fallen off 3 times. This last time that I put it back on I noticed that the roller at the bottom of the spring loaded tension setter is not in line with the rest of the pulley track. It sets to the inside of the track and is wearing a ridge on the inside of that roller. I was wondering if when they put my tension setter back on after changing the alternator if they for got to put a piece back in like a spacer. If not, what would be an explanation for the tension setter roller to be off track.
Why wont my serptine belt stay on after alternator change?
your belt tensioner should be bolted and torqued properly, generally there's no spacer that i know of that holds it on the side of the block but who knows.

it is possible they didn't tighten all the way and the belt is riding off the pulley on it enough to throw it. Have them take it back off and make sure it is properly aligned.
Why wont my serptine belt stay on after alternator change?
Sounds like they put a spacer in the wrong spot, like on the wrong side of a bracket or something. Take it back and demand that they fix the problem free of charge.
The tensioner is probally bad, they dont cost much and arent that hard to change. However, I would go back to the mechanic and complain, he should help you out with it a lil bit. He shouldve seen it when he changed the belt.
Both of the top posters are correct, look to make sure the pulley on the tensioner or the alternator is in line with its neighbors.

You should probably replace the belt too since its been damaged by repeatedly coming off.
you need to replace the tensioner. it is spring loaded, and the spring can wear. a tensioner onn most vehicles should be less than $50.00. you probably should replace the pulleys as well, as they can wear too. tensioner/pulley combos can be purchased. As for your mechanic, he had to have noticed!!!! He's just lazy! Find a new one
take it back they installed it wrong its not lining up with the other pulleys. Its got to be presicely straight with the other pulleys

Changing a generater to a alternator the wiring of it ?
It is easy to do and will satisfy your needs a lot better, altho' you did not post your question clear. what year and make of engine? Using the right mount should not be a problem. as far as the wiring as always, There is a pos. [+] wire that goes directly to the battery from the rear of the alternator.

Alternators that has the regulator mounted internally only needs one other wire. This wire is to 'excite' the alternator when the operation begins.[switch on]

    %26quot;BRILLIANT%26quot;!!!!
Changing a generater to a alternator the wiring of it ?
Have you looked at using a battery isolator? Might save you some headaches.

Do you mean you want a separate generator with its own motor to be used to charge the battery? This is incredibly inefficient unless you absolutely have to charge the battery while the RV isn't running, because of the poor efficiency of the gasoline generator engine. If you don't have it already, a splitter to charge the inside battery from the motor of the vehicle is much better.

If you want to charge a 12 volt battery from a 120 volt generator, just buy a plug in battery charger.

And you seem to think an alternator is a 12 volt device while a generator is something else. Cars used to have 12 volt generators for recharging batteries and alternators are more reliable and cheaper, so all cars have them now - make AC electricity and rectify it with solid state electronics. You can't change a generator to an alternator.

Boy this is weird, I just did one of these on an Infinity I30 yesterday, same engine and similar body.

Remove the cooling fan + shroud assy.

Loosen the idler pulley and remove the alternator belt.

Remove the right undercover, (the alternator is going to come out from the bottom).

    Remove the right side cover.

Remove the 4 AC compressor bolts so you can slide it forward.

Remove the large battery feed wire.

    Remove the upper alternator bolt.

Lean the alternator toward the radiator and remove the other alternator plug on top.

It may take some prying to get the lower part of the alternator off the bracket.

You are going to move the AC compressor toward the radiator and toward your right and the alternator will come out the side. It will be tight but it will come out. The bottom radiator hose will be a little in the way but it can stay on. It's a small pain in the butt. :)

*** Upon reassembly plug the alternator connector in first, you can put the lower bolt in to hold it up then lean the alternator outward to do this. It's almost impossible to do it after the top alternator bolt is in.

You need to take the front of the car off.

Remove radiator, remove radiator supports, then if necessary remove front bumper assembly. good luck.

Why is my voltage on my car all the way up i just changed my alternator its a 99 gmc savana 3500?
    replace batt today
Your alternator has a voltage and current regulation system. I think that your alternator is defective in that puts out too much current. If you have a true ammeter gauge, it should show the charging rate but most new vehicles use only voltmeter. Most alternators will produce about 30 amps max and then drop down as the battery charges. If the charging rate exceeds that amount and if it does not drop as the battery charges, then the regulator is not working properly. You have to get this corrected soon cause if you allow an abnormally high charging rate your battery will overheat and it could burst. If you have a real voltmeter it should read between 12 and 13 volts as you drive. It will read around 14 volts when you first start the car and then drop down to 12-13.
The Delco alternator and regulator assembly you are using either works or doesn't.Are you sure the volt meter is calibrated right?
    Greg

Save yourself some head ache, take the vehicle to your local

parts house and have them run a voltage test on the Charging

system, lets first see if it's your in-dash gage or a charging problem

Sometimes the gage will go bad.

Battery light is on after Two alternator changes?

I had the alternator replaced TWICE yesterday and still having problems....

I had replaced it only because it was making one heck of a noise.. (bearings went out)... So I took it in and had it replaced today with a 80 amp BOSH alternator. It was charging and checked out ok so I drove home. I made a quick stop (about 20 min) at the store and when I came out and started it up, the Battery light was on..

So I took it back and they changed out the Alternator with another new one, tested it, yep charging.. So i went home again.. came out tonight about 5 hr later, and the Battery light is on again... It's not charging...

What is going on...?? The battery is 2 years old and the only reason for changing the Alternator was because of the bearing noise... Belt is new, Idler pulley is new, engine is quiet at idle.

Any ideas..?? I am stuck until Monday unless I can fix this...

Battery light is on after Two alternator changes?
Could be damage to battery because of the prior failing alternator/voltage regulator.
Battery light is on after Two alternator changes?
A bad batch of alternators OR a defective battery.

Every year 1.6 million alternators are replaced when it was the battery that was the problem.

Infrequently - a battery cannot be charged.

Quick test: Connect a portable, automatic battery charger, (one with a meter) and watch the meter. If it is set on 8 amps and does not rise to a 4 to 8 amp charging rate or does not show ANY charging rate - then look at a defective battery.

Only if the battery has a full charge of 12.66V - OR - is defective - will the charger not charge.
First open up the battery cap, and check if water is in the cells.

The battery could be the problem.

Next check your belts, are they tight?

I'd go with the battery and have the battery checked out.
I am guessing those were aftermarket alternators rather than new OEM from the dealer. Your experience is why I gave up on aftermarket alternators about 15 years ago. The very high failure rate in the first day of service was too much to stand. From your description it is hard to blame the problem on anything except the alternator - put one in, it works for a while.

At this point a battery charger may be your best friend. Modern chargers are much kinder to batteries than earlier ones and $50 or so can get you a beauty if you don't have one now. I had to replace my old clunker and I am very happy with my Schumacher SE-5212A. As long as you are just driving in town and not running the fan on high with headlights the battery should keep you going.

The alternative is another of what you have... unless they still have your original. At least it worked.

It is a tight squeeze, but possible - there is enough space if you can get underneath the car.

I've not done it myself, but know it was done on the test vehicles during development of the Matiz.

I have to change the alternator on a S10 Blazer ! What is the procedure for loosening the belt? ?
if its a serpentine belt you put a ratchet on the tensioner pully and push or pull it till it take tension off the belt, to make it easy buy a maintenence book at your local auto parts store

Napa Auto parts can test it for free.Sounds like a bad battery.
I changed my alternator at the beginning of this year, now my car needs to be jump every time it wont start, ?
Take it to a parts store and have them test the charging sytem for free.
I would say your battery is bad but to be on the safe side I would go to autozone and get a free charging system check.
maybe you got a bad alternator. should still be under warranty. find the receipt or if you can not find it go back to where you bought it %26amp; have them check it. if it is not bad you will need to replace your battery.
With the car engine running, use a voltmeter to measure the output voltage of the alternator. If it is measured 13-14 V, your alternator is good. This means your battery fails to hold the charge. You need a new battery.
It could be both, eather the alternator or the battery
Local Auto parts store can check both. Hitch a ride and take your battery to them and they will tell if batt. is good. If its neither you have what is called a phantom charge using juice from your battery while it is parked....Ie clock, something plugged into ciggarette lighter or dome or trunk light.

How do I change the alternator on a 2000 mazda mpv minivan?

Minivans are a bit harder, as they kind of cram everything into the engine compartment...while you may not like this, I'd take it to a shop. I work on cars, and don't like vans...but that's my preference.

Otherwise, remove the negative battery cable and put it to the side...find the serpentine belt tensioner, relieve the tension with a breaker bar or wrench, slip the belt off the alternator...remove the wires on the alternator, remove the two to three bolts holding it to the brackets (you may have to remove a bracket too)...remove alternator.

Put the new alternator on it, in reversing the steps. Be careful in putting the wires back on...when you put the belt back on, make darn sure the belt is tracking in all the grooves on ALL the pulleys, and routes as per the label routing picture.

How do I change the alternator on my 1994 Honda Accord LX 5 speed?

    Hello,

Rich B said that right, I would like to add how you can test it if it works (instead of crossing fingers :D):

-you can check the correct tightness of the belt by turning the alternator pulley with your hands. when it's tight enough, you won't be able to turn the pulley, or the the crankshaft will turn with it. When it's loose, the pulley will turn, but the belt won't. This can be even when the belt is not screaming.

-get a digital multimeter (the most simplier will do it), and measure voltage in 20 V range at your battery terminals

-just turn on the ignition, on your dashboard, you should see the small battery lamp lit. when it does not, either the lamp is burnt out, or the voltage regulator of the alternator is defective/disconnected, check the wiring (generally marked DF) and connections. When the lamp is burnt out, you must replace the bulb, as without the bulb the alternator doesn't have excitation from the voltage regulator and will not work !!!

-when the battery lamp is on, start your engine. The lamp should be off as soon as the engine revs up to idle. If it's not, then the regulator/alternator has a problem, recheck the connections. When everything was right and the light doesn't go out, there's a problem with the new alternator/connections, swith off the engine!

-when the lapm goes out after starting, swith off all consumers (A/C, lights, radio, vents etc.). With idle speed you should measure 13.6-14.5 Volts at the battery terminals. Below or above is the charging voltage incorrect, both leading to battery problems in short terms.

    (1. %26lt;13.6 V -%26gt; possibly alternator, e.g. diode problem; or battery charge cable too old

    2. %26gt;14.5 V -%26gt; possibly voltage regulator error, it's generally built-in to the alternator)

    - when it was OK, swith on some consumers (lights, rear window heating, strong hi-fi, vents or A/C in medium setting, at least two of these), you should measure in the same range as mentioned (13.6-14.5).

-with the consumers on, rev the engine up a little (say, 2500 RPM constant), and look at the voltage, the same margins apply.

When your charging voltage is between 13.6-14.5 Volts regardless of consumers and RPM, all works fine.

Note: swithing on all your consumer loads your alternator badly, when it doesn't take more, the voltage will drop and the missing power will come from your battery, which will drain it in medium terms (runing your alternator 100% power all the time makes the lifetime of it shorter).

How do I change the alternator on my 1994 Honda Accord LX 5 speed?
first off, get a Haynes book for your car, second off, if youre asking this question on yahoo answers, you should probably go to a mechanic. getting the belt tension right (or even all back on) can be a real pain, especially in a tiny little car like that.
How do I change the alternator on my 1994 Honda Accord LX 5 speed?
First, disconnect one of the leads to the battery.Loossen the mounting blot and disconnect the wire, remove bolts and replace the alternator, reconnect things, make sure fan belt is on all pulleys.before tightening mounting blot use a big screw diver or

other lever to pull alternator and it will tighten the belt.Last thing

reconnect the battery at the terminal.Cross fingers, start it up.

If there is a screaming noise, from the engine loosen the the belt,

by loosening the mounting bolt a moving the alternator a bit.Hope this helps.

Remember to return the old one to the store and pick up your core deposit.
Relieve the tension on the belt with the belt tensioner, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the wires from the back of the alternator, remove the bolts from the alternator that hold it to the bracket on the engine. Then reverse this order with the new one. Its an easy change. At the most it should take an hour!

My car battery refuses to hold a charge and the alternator does not seem to be giving enough voltage to it...?

My car battery refuses to hold a charge and the alternator does not seem to be giving enough voltage to it...?
When a load is placed on the alternator, such as recharging the battery, it is harder to turn. Therefore, a worn belt could be slipping and not turning the alternator fast enough. Tighten or replace the belt before any more tests and before buying any more parts.
My car battery refuses to hold a charge and the alternator does not seem to be giving enough voltage to it...?
Have you replaced the belt. If the belt is worn it may not being doing it's job.
#1. did you replace the alternator with a new one, from a junkyard, or rebuilt?

If your cars alternator died, its probably a common problem, so if you replaced it with one from the junkyard or rebuilt, it be faulty... its not unusual at all to hear of a rebuilt failing the day its installed.

#2. did you spend the money on a high quality battery, or a reconditioned unit?

once again, same thing, if you went with a reconditioned unit, it could already be failing.

#3. charge your battery with a charger, then drive normally, and if it dies again, start feeling wire connections, feel the battery terminals, if you can, feel the wires behind the dash... if any of them feel warm or hot, you have a short, or loose connection. this could easily kill a battery.

obviously, make sure you hooked up the alternator wiring harness... youd be suprised to hear some of the stuff people do..

#4. did you replace the alternator relay? this is probably the longest shot to diagnose a problem, but it may be worth a shot.
Ok, so if you drove in to an Advance Auto or AutoZone store and had them test the battery and charging system on the car (they do it in the parking lot at some locations), then you could get one more confirmation that you, in fact, have a good battery and alternator. In that case, I would next test the %26quot;parasitic current draw%26quot; from the battery. When you've parked your car for the night, there shouldn't be more than 1/4 ampere (250 milliamperes) of current being drawn from the battery as it sleeps in your garage. It's easy for you to check and see how much current is actually being drained from your battery when the car's parked by connecting a Digital Multi-Meter (DMM, $15 Sears) in series between a battery post and the cable you've disconnected from it. Make sure to first set the DMM to the 10 Amp scale. Don't worry about wire polarity, because you'll simply read either plus or minus Amps readings as you swap the wire leads. The main thing is to see if your reading more than 0.25 Amps (1/4 Amp or 250 milliamps). If you read something like One Amp or more, you've got a problem with something being on in the car that's drawing current when everything should be shut off. For example, is there a light on in the trunk that you can't see is on? Did you wire up your own alarm etc and not know it's drawing excessive current (amps)? Is the glove compartment lamp on? Is the hood lamp on? etc. Eventually, you can remove one fuse at a time from the fuse box to see if that stops the excessive current flow and locate the circuit causing the problem. Remember, you need to drive the car a couple times a week to keep the battery charged up too.

    Thanks Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How do I change the alternator for a 1990 Toyota Celica GT 2.2L?
A fairly easy repair for a novice. Disconnect the battery cables before you start. Alternator is on your left looking from the front of the car. Driven by the serpentine belt. You need to disconnect the power cable and control harness first. Power cable is on the front. One big brass nut under a plastic cover. The other harness is on the back of the alternator(right hand side, the side away from the pulley) It has a plastic housing you squeeze to disengage and pull. The unit is only held on by two bolts. One on top that is used for adjusting the tension on the belt. It is bolted through a slotted bracket to allow for adjustment. The other one is directly under the pulley on the alternator. This is a long one which the alternator pivots on. You may not be able to see it but if you reach just under the pulley you can feel it. Disconnect the wires, loosen both bolts and remove the belt, finish removing the bolts and yank that baby out.

    The alternator noise of corolla?

Someone told me, my car corolla 2000 needs to change the alternator and battery, because the noise.
    The alternator noise of corolla?
    Check the serpentine belt first!

But if they are telling you to change the alternator AND the battery, I'd walk right out of there. The battery doesn't make any noise so I don't understand why they would want you to change that except to make money.

Your alternator spins and could be making noise. The spinning hum is normal, but if it begins to squeek or squeel, it could be bad bearings. However, a loose belt will cause similar symptoms. Change the alt/serpentine belt first. Quite a bit cheaper, if the noise still exists, then go after the alternator.
    The alternator noise of corolla?
what kind of noise is it? is it a squeeking noise or a huming noise? or what?
A noisy alternator makes the battery bad? not likely, but it COULD need a charge. If the battery is low recharge it asap,

as lead acid batteries don't like being run down completely dead or left uncharged.

I cannot advise you on the alternator without hearing it myself.

Voltage regulator, that which converts the AC current from the alternator to DC which the battery needs to charge. That is my guess.
Changed my alternator and my car still wont charge.?
check your voltage regulator. and clean your battery terminals. also, check your fuses.
This isn't the correct way to test an alternator. In fact there is a good chance you can damage the alternator while doing this.

The correct way to test it is with a Volt meter. Charging rate should be 13.8 VDC to 15 VDC.

If yo don't have a meter, find someone who does.

With the jeep it is possible that the battery temp sensor has failed.

At this point it would serve you to take it to a repair shop that displays the ASE shingle.

I didn't change the battery though, could this cause the problem? It runs fine and then just kills! Please help me, I am a single Mom.
I have changed the alternator on my 1990 Buick Park Avenue and it still has to be jump started. Why?
The primary electrical system is such a pain in the butt!

I am hopeful I'm not insulting you here, but so you understand what's going on, a brief explanation first.

When you start the car, you are activating the battery to provide electricity to the starter motor. Once the car starts, the current is shut off to the starter and the alternator starts charging the battery again. There are other things going on also, but that's the basics for starting the car.

Since the car stars, we can eliminate the starter motor. That's good!

Now from here there are a couple things.

When a battery goes bad, what happens is that it builds resistance, and becomes almost impossible to charge. The current provided from the alternator is not strong enough to overcome the resistance and it can't charge the battery.

If by chance, you called a tow truck, the charge they provide is much stronger than the charge provided from your car's alternator. This is why the battery may have been charged even though it needs to be replaced.

If this is the problem, what happens, is that after the battery is charged, your car will start up fine, and everything works. But your engine, lights, radio, and anything else is running off the battery, and your alternator is not able to charge the battery. When this occurs, as soon as the battery is drained, the car just dies. This is what you experienced.

Now with the alternator, this is easier to explain. It simply is not charging the battery. And once again, the same thing will happen. Once the battery is drained, the car will just die.

The difficutly is that you don't know what the source of the problem is. Is it the battery, or is it the alternator?

Typically, you test the battery first. It's easier to pull from the vehicle, it's easier to test, and takes a lot less time.

Now with this, when purchasing a new (or rebuilt) alternator, it's not unusual to get a bad one. Although this is a frustrating problem, it's not the end of the world. You just take it back to where you purchased it from, and they replace it, no problem.

So at this point you don't know if it's the battery of a bad alternator.

I'm sorry, but I think you should start from scratch. Have the battery tested before you take the alternator back. Once they test it, you will know if it needs to be replaced. If it does, then you have solved your problem. You just pop the new battery in there.

Good luck, and I know it doesn't help, but we've all been there!
I have changed the alternator on my 1990 Buick Park Avenue and it still has to be jump started. Why?
It could be that the battery can't hold a charge any longer or just a faulty regulator switch. It can also just be a faulty ground wire. Look at the posts of the battery and check the connections, if they are badly corroded, clean them to ensure that you have a proper circuit.
apparently the battery is shot, get it checked out at autozone, it might have a bad cell in it.

check your battery first and if its good make sure you have 12 volts to the alternator. this is where you should of told us what kind of car it is because it makes a big difference. a simple check is, turn your key on and look for your battery/charging light. it has to work but this only applies to certain vehicles
    Some things to look at:

How old is the battery? There will be a time when a battery will take a charge, but will not hold it. A load tester will determine how strong, or how weak the battery is.

Another cause could be the voltage regulator. Have that checked.

What is the condition of the battery terminals? If corroded, the battery will not properly charge.

The ground wire from the battery to the frame may be loose or corroded.

A last resort-- If the engine cranks slower than normal, the starter is drawing too much voltage during start-up, thus draining the battery. The battery will only be charged properly when the engine is running, not at start-up.

These are a few things to check. I would suggest checking the terminals and load test the battery.
you might have a broken wire causing this problem. first does the battery light come on when you first turn the ignition on?make sure your getting 12volts to the main cable to the alt.
First get a volt meter - set at DC ..... Open Hood -- start engine - wait a minute or two.... Put the meter across the battery terminals - (engine still running) - It should read 13.5 to 14 volts. NOT 12 volts. In order for the battery to charge it has to have 13.8 volts in order to charge the battery. If it reads 12 volts then the battery will not charge. How an alternator charges a 12 volt battery is it has to supply 1 1/2 to 2 volts over 12 volts for the battery to draw/take a charge. ----- If its under 13 volts then the alternator, voltage regulator or electrical connections are bad. Dont forget to check the main ground (negative -) battery wire to the chassis and engine block.... If it (alternator) is supplying 13.8 volts to a battery then the battery should be charging..........
I AGREE WITH TIM B SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A FORD CHECK THE MAXI FUSE

On a 98 chevy van express to change the alternator it is very tight in there is there something to remove to?

make it easier to work on i have done alternators on other cars this one seems to tight to work on

only easy way i know of is to have someone else do it sometimes it's easier to get at from under the vehicle good luck

it takes patience and il give you a hint, on some of them you will find a third bolt on the back to the intake manifold that will just make your mind hurt.

Does an alternator on a car make winding sound?

The alternator was changed, still the same.. What could be the problem?
Does an alternator on a car make winding sound?
Your alternator should NOT make a whining sound, and I WOULD worry about it, even if it's NOT loud. It could GET loud later, when the work is out of warranty. The belt could be too tight or too loose, or the new alternator could be defective. It could also be misaligned pulleys. It may also be something other than the alternator making the sound, such as the timing belt, or even a vacuum leak.

Either way, you should take it back to the mechanic who installed the alternator. He shouldn't have released the car to you in the first place, at least until he figured out what the sound was.

If HE'S the one who told you that this is normal, then that means he has no idea what the sound is, %26amp; he's just trying to get rid of you. You might eventually have to take it to someone else.

some alternators make a whining sound, it could be the bracket is bent or misaligned, unless it's really loud, i wouldn't worry about it...
