Alternator Change on Powerstroke?

A basic question on changing out the alternator on a 7.3 liter powerstroke engine. I've got a 1999 Ford F-250 and I want to pull the alternator to test it. I've given it a quick glance and it looks like pulling the unit is pretty straighforward and on top (versus hard to reach). However, in order to loosen the serpentine belt, where is the adjustment (tension) pulley? I don't want to turn more bolts than I need to....thanks in advance
Alternator Change on Powerstroke?
The last answer raises a good point - most charging problems can be tested without removing parts. If you do want (or need) to remove the alternator, get a breaker bar with a 1/2 inch drive, seat it securely into the tensioner opening, and get a helper to hold it with 2 hands to loosen the belt. Remove the serpentine belt from the alternator pulley and leave it hanging in place - it will make it a lot easier to re-install if you don't completlely remove it. Taking a couple photos of the belt in place is a good idea if you have to remove or replace it, they can be tough to figure out unless you have a diagram.
Alternator Change on Powerstroke?
Mine is a '94, tensioner is located between the alternator and power steering pump, the belt runs underneath the tensioner. I use a fairly long bar, it takes considerable force to push it up.
Look for the pulley bracket with a 1/2%26quot; drive square in it. Use a breaker bar to pry it back to release tension on the belt.
Take it to a shop, they can test the charging system without a turn of a wrench !!
jac 1067 is correct.... actually if the truck was never wrecked, there should be a sticker on the radiator support or the hood that tells the size of the ratchet head and the direction you need to turn it in to release the belt.

Changed Alternator now no lights?

I have a 87 nissan sentra the alternator was bad had it tested in car and then once I pulled it. Hooked new one back up and first thing I noticed was dash lights went out, then came back on when I reved it. Tightened the belt up cause it was slipping a bit, lights came on then went out and haven't came on since? Radio not working either that when out when the lights went. Anyone have any incline as to what it could be?
Changed Alternator now no lights?
You have an electrical issue somehwere. If the alternator were bad, the battery would have taken up the load but it isnt, I would be inclined to check the fuseable link.
Changed Alternator now no lights?
sounds like you may have a short under the dash. have you checked the fuses. just changing the alt wont knock out the light or radio.
The alternator wouldn't cause that to happen, however if you let the wire running to the alternator hit the motor or something on he metal frame of the veicle it would cause a fuse to blow, so be sure to check all of the fuses, you might have to fuse boxs ,one under the hood %26amp; another one under the dash or inside of the clove box.
Rebuilt alts are relatively often no good. Also have your battery tested.

My 98 sunfire turns over but wont start, when i turn the key to start i hear the fuel pump turn on so i dont no?

ive checked all fuses and relays because i just changed alternator and found that the radio and dome light fuse were blown so i would think i should be something similar is why it wont start?prior to changing the alternator my car would always start very easy

When you changed the alternator, did you disconnect the battery? You mentioned that some items were blown, maybe you shorted out the module if you have not spark. You can get a spark tester for cheap, or just remove #1 spark plug and hold next to the engine block while someone cranks the engine, if you see spark then you might be ok. Next check PSI on fuel pump. Only need spark and fuel to make it work.

maybe its ure batery try jumping the car or if that doesent work try hitting the starter with something hard and the car should start!hope this helps
I'd be double checking the alternator you installed even if its new but especially if it's used , remove the belt and see how smoothly it's pulley turns bec a worn out or seized pulley could cause the engine not turn fast enough to start and check it's wiring over closely and all the fuses in both of the fuse boxes. Also be sure you check the fuses closely and any relays dealing the starter, fuel pump and ASD system and if possible have a free scan performed on it just in case.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way check the starter , battery ,alternator, engine block ground posts just in case their loose or rusted or corroded and wiring closely and the ignition wire, plus be sure that the ignition ,steering wheel and gear shifter are in the right position bec all of the things I've mentioned can cause starting issues. You can clean these connectors etc with a wire brush , sandpaper , a file one by one to be sure that their clean, solid and tight.
how did you check fuses by pulling them out or by using tester which is the right way to check fuses

  • If i replaced new battery and alternator, yet car won't start unless i jump the car.. what is wrong with it..?

i changed new alternator maybe 5 months ago, and i replaced new battery last night. And still car wont start unless i jump the car..

i drove 20 minutes ish around the town right after i replaced the battery. and i parked. then today, i tried to start, didn't start.. so i jumped, then it started..

can you guys help me what is wrong with it?
If i replaced new battery and alternator, yet car won't start unless i jump the car.. what is wrong with it..?
You starter is probably shot and dragging. They get to where it takes more and more power to start. What is probably happening is it is pulling way too many amps. The new battery isn't even enough it needs a second battery to give it enough to turn.
If i replaced new battery and alternator, yet car won't start unless i jump the car.. what is wrong with it..?
Don't panic, it could still be the battery.

Often new batteries are really flat, and your 20 minutes may not have been enough to charge it up.

Go for a longer drive with higher revs, and you should be ok
How did you know you needed a new alt? You have a current draw somewhere. Check the trunk light or the glove box light. The switch may be bad.

If you have a good charge on the battery and this happens, but then, if you disconnect the battery cable overnight, replace it to find it starts, you have something drawing current when it shouldn't be.

How to change alternator for a 2002 Pt Cruiser?

We are having problems with our pt starting. My boyfriend has talked to a mechanic and it looks like it is the alternator but the mechanic needs the alternator to test it. Well our car is stuck at the house and doesnt start so my boyfriend is trying to take off alternator himself. It has been hard for him since the alternator is buried deep under all kinds of stuff so he thought it would be easier to get to it by going under the car. Even that has been a task to get it out. is there and easier way to get that alternator out? Help!
How to change alternator for a 2002 Pt Cruiser?
    Charging the battery might be the easiest if you can. Otherwise, to take out the Alternator, the way to do that is through the passenger side wheel well. You can find instructions with pictures by going here;

    http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairG鈥?/a>

and enter your year, make, model and engine. (if you don't know which you have, it doesn't really matter) Then click the link for %26quot;Engine Electrical%26quot;, and it's the first section that pops up. You can click on the pictures to enlarge them.

Navigate back to the %26quot;Steering%26amp;suspension%26quot; section for help with the lower control arm. Like I said, a lot easier to just charge the battery and drive it to the mechanic if you can.
How to change alternator for a 2002 Pt Cruiser?
Easiest is to charge the battery -you can do this with jumper cables and a running car. Then crank the Petey up. If will now run to Florida if you do not run radio, heater, lights etc. Drive it to mechanic and let him check it out and fix it.
The PT utilizes a generator. I would recommend that you use a service guide if you attempt this procedure. It contains numerous illustrations and instructions for the sub procedures mentioned below.

I recently changed the alternator and battery on my 95 dodge ram 2500.the battery continues to go dead ?

The gauge shows a 12 even after engine is running
I recently changed the alternator and battery on my 95 dodge ram 2500.the battery continues to go dead ?
I had this problem with a car of mine. It turned out that there was a computer module in the car that went bad, %26amp; kept draining the battery.
I recently changed the alternator and battery on my 95 dodge ram 2500.the battery continues to go dead ?
you might have a Short some ware in the car.
check the wiring from the alternator to the battery it could be bad or corroded
    wiring?
if it is still going dead there is something, somewhere that is taking it down. aftermarket cd player, anything that is not stock on the car could do it.

or a ground could be touching somewhere.

you know the alternator is charging while its running, cause it reads 12 volts, but just to make sure, take a tester straight to the battery to see what it reads then. you only have about 30 minutes on a battery if the alternator is not charging, if you can leave it running for that amount of time, your alternator is doing what it is supposed to. but i would think that something is pulling your battery down that you don't know about.

But if you can get in contact with me, I would like to know what the problem is.
have someone do a draw check on it,that will show up any drainage on the battery and allow you to start checking things to find out whats draining the battery, with all it being new it probably has a small draw on the battery causing this too happen,a good 12 volt test light will help you do a draw test on it then you,ll know, good luck.
If your only showing 12 volts while it's running then it's not charging, you should read at least 13.5 volts on a volt meter while it's running, 12 when it's cut off.

Changed alternator now my ac compressor doesn't work? 95 maxima?

Hi, recently I got my alternator changed and now my ac compressor doesn't work. I noticed a wire dangling under my car which was from the compressor I bring it back they told me they disconnected it when they did the alternator job so they reconnected it and told me it should work since I got there late when they were closing I had to leave. But it still don't work could I of messed up something whe I turned the ac on the other day and it wasn't connected . Please respond back on any ideas..
Changed alternator now my ac compressor doesn't work? 95 maxima?
I don't know what the problem could be. But I wouldn't use that shop again. I don't see how they could screw up the ac replacing the alternator, sounds like sub par mechanic work to me.
Changed alternator now my ac compressor doesn't work? 95 maxima?
That is probably for the compressor clutch. There is no way you damaged anything when you turned it on while it was disconnected. I would ask them to check their work. Maybe the belt on the AC compressor is loose or maybe the connector (wire you saw) was damaged when they were prying on things to tighten the alternator belt.
